JONESVILLE % Jonesville, Jan. 2.?One of the enjoyable events of the holiday season was the cantata, "Good Times With Santa Claus," given by the Baptist Sunday school on the evening of Dec. 23rd, Mr. C. N. Chandler taking the part of Santa Claus. Several choruses were sung by the entire school and principal parts and principal choruses were taken by about 40 members of the school. The young people were trained by Mesdames W. W. Wood, W. P. I^eister and J. T. Scott. After the entertainment refreshments were served to several hundred people. Misses Georgia Turner of Spartanburg and Susie Cannon of Clifton were week-end guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Sams last week. Mrs. Hugh Little and children of Marion, N. C., were quests of Mrs. J. E. Lindsay for the Yuletide season. Prof, and Mrs. J. C. Littlejohn and children and Miss Bessie Mell Poates of Clemson college were visitors to relatives in town last week. Miss Kate Shipman, a student at Meredith college, spent the holidays with her sister, Mrs. J. D. Whitmire. Mrs. W. P. Leister entertained a number of young people Friday evening complimentary to Miss Shipman and the affair was an altogether enjoyable occasion. The young men of Jonesville gave a dance last Tuesday evening at the Armory in honor of the college girls and visiting young ladies. Miss Caroline D. Southard, who teaches in Columbia, spent the holidays with her mother, Mrs. W. O. Southard. Mr. and Mrs. Roy P. Whitlock were guests for the week-end at the home of their mother, Mrs. Ida Whitlock. Miss Walker of Kentucky is spending sometime at the Presbyterian manse as the guests of her sister, Mrs. W. S. Porter. Misses Marion Brown of Glendale, Mary Spears and Pearle Kelly of Union were guests last week of Miss Isma Gault. FIFTY-FOUR PERSONS LYNCHED DURING 1 Hi6 Tuskegee, Ala., Jan. 1.?Fifty-four persons were lynched during 191*5, according to the bureau record at Tuskegee institute. Of this number, 52 were negroes. Last year the number was f>7, of which 13 were white. Cieorgia had the most with 14. Nine were lynched for attempted assault and four for assault. As the Baptist church is at present being torn down, in order that a new church may be built on the same site, it was necessary to use another auditorium for the entertainment. The entertainment for the even injr, a ^nristmas cantata, was given under the direction of the efficient superintendent of the Sunday school, Mr. W. P.vLeister, Mrs. W. P. Leister, Mrs. John T. Scott and Miss Lucie I.ittlejohn. The cantatta, in three acts, pave many pleasing Christmas . songs, a view of the family who anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus and then the real Santa Claus (which part was played by Mr. L. M. Chandler)?carried the audience, together with a number of little boys and girls from the stage, down under the ground to his own workshop, where the lovely toys are in making for Christmas, 1917. Dife and mirth were evident throughout the play, and all parts of it were indeed well rendered. At the close of the cantata the officers of the Sunday school, with the assistance of several small boys, distributed boxes of candies, and bags containing apples, oranges and nuts to every member of the school and to all the guests; a total number of 225 Sunday school students and about 200 other guests.
