C., as second class matter. SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year $1.00 Six Months .50 Three Months .25 ADVERTISEMENTS One square, first insertion $1.00 Every subsequent insertion .50 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1910. In the death of Robert E. Gonzales at El Paso this week South Carolina has lost a brilliant son, and journalism has lost one of its shining marks. Since "Bob" Gonzales left Columbia for the front many readers of The State have looked forward to the time when he would come back home and again take up the work which he put aside to enlist in the National Guard. Death has claimed him, and he will come no more to gladden the heart and bring cheer to the lonely. But he died for his coun-J try. and his work and his patriotism will live in the hearts of many through the coming years. Wo sincerely hope the gentlemen who are contmplating the building of a street railway system for Union will he successful in their planning, for we cannot think of any one enterprise that would do more for our city than would the operation of such a system. We trust the city authorities will deal liberally with the proposed corporators. We do not see how there could be a fairer basis for the granting of the franchise than that outlined in the proposed articles of agreement, j Indeed ,the city has in these proposed articles every reasonable safeguard for the future protection of the city and of the public. The question of there being a 50-year franchise is not unreasonable from any point of view, and is no more than is granted to such enterprises in every city. No man nor set of men would invest $50,000 in some enterprise of public nature without reasonable protection. We do not think there is any reason in not giving the franchise for the 50 years. It will be 50 years and many more before we get street cars for Union unless there be given just such protection. It will not be fourteen months before the cars will be in operation, provided the franchise be granted for the gentlemen behind the movement have already provided the necessary financial sinews for carrying out th? enterprise. It is to be hoped that the city authorities will take a liberal view of the matter and grant the franchise without any great amount of haggling. INEFFICIENCY FROM OVEREATI V/^ 1.1U. More and more it is being demon- | strated that a man's productive capacity is lowered by overeating. This is true, no matter what be the nature of his work. Even the physical laborer loses efficiency when the system is closed by overfeeding. Still I more noticeable is the case of the mental worker. An overfed body is a fearful drawback to the activities of the brain. This is so manifest that even a child cannot fail to appreciate the truthfulness of it. Much of the overfed condition -is the result, not of too great quantity of food, but of ill chosen or wrong combinations in foods. And we do not have to go to men of science to learn that these things are so. We have "hog killing"' time, followed with sick headaches, socalled "bilious" attacks and a feeling of general "eussedness." When asked what the trouble is, we say, "too much hog." 'I his we know to be so. the only trouble being that we do not make the double application which might justly be made. Christmas time is a 'great time for overeating and for eating a combination of foods that only the strongest can get away with without serious harm. Pickles and sweet milk, to say nothing of a thousand other com Dinations, will be swallowed at the same meal. Turkey, pork, sausage, and a few other meats will be capped by a big plate of oyster pie, when any one of the above dishes would be quite enough meat for one meal. At this season of the year we often hear those inclined to "preach" warning people to beware of the Christmas toddy. This may be well enough, but we venture the assertion that overeating will make more dull, heavy heads the morning after Christmas than will the drinking of liquor, bad as the latter may be.
