HUGE PROPERTY LOSS AFTER EXPLOSIONS NEW YORK DAMAGE ESTIMATEI AT TWENTY-FIVE MILLION DOLLARS. Number of Deaths Can Not Be De termined Until Workmen Can Be Checked Up?Five States Feel Effect of Explosion. New York, July .10.?Property los estimated at $25,000,000 was causei early today by a series of terrific ex plosions of ammunition awaiting ship ment to the entente allies and store< on Black Tom island, a small stri] of land jutting into New York bay ot Jersey City. The loss of life still wa problematical tonight. It will not b determined definitely until there ha been opportunity to check up th workmen employed on the island am on boats nearby. Three are known to be dea'd and a least five more are missing. Scores o persons were injured, some of then probably mortally. The detonations, which were felt ii five States, began with a continuou rapid fire of small shells, then tin blowing up of great quantities o dynamite, trinitol tunine and othe high explosives, followed by the burst ing of thousands of shrapnel shell wnicn showered the surrounding coun try and waters for miles around. Bip Warehouses C?o. Fire that started soon after tin first preat crash destroyed 12 of tin huge warehouses of the National Stor ape company on Black Tom island in which were stored merchandisi valued between $12,000,000 and $15, 000,000. The flames, shooting into tin clouds, were reflected apainst N'ev York's "skyline" of towerinp offic buildinps, which for a few moment were shaken to their foundations as i by an earthquake. Miles of streets ii Manhattan were strewn with brokei plass and shattered signs. Early reports of heavy loss of lif< were impossible of verification and tin authorities asserted the number o deaths probably would be small. I was said that owinp to the extent o the wreckape it mipht be several day before the exact fipures could be ob tained. The cause of the disaster had no been determined tonipht. Officials o the National Storape company and th p Lehiph Valley railway, which also suf fered heavily throuph loss of property declared that reports to them showe ^ a fire started shortly after 1 o'cloc this morninp on a barpe belonpini to an independent towi'np compan I that had been moored alongside dock used by the railroad to transfe ammunition shipments from trains t vessels in tne naruor. The barge, it was said, was ther without authority either of the rail road or the storage company. Th officials refused to disclose the nam of the independent towing company saying they were investigating "to as certain whether the barge purposel had been set on fire as the result of plot." _ A BAPTIST GOVERNOR. A Ba'ptist preacher, Rev. S. . k Catts, in Florida, has been nominal R ed for governor. Dr. C. W. It is declared in th local press that when he came t k Tampa after the primary to see th votes counted he did not haVe mone with which to buy a return tick< home. He did not have a single hews paper in the State to support hi campaign, and as he toured the Stat he was compelled to accept the ho: pitality of friends or stop at chea boarding houses. His announcemer for the office was hailed with rid cule, and the executive committee c the party tried to engineer the ei elusion of his name from a place c , the ballot. He said frankly that li * would not appoint a single man to a ^ office if he could find a worthy mai ried man to fill it, that he would n< appoint a man that drank liquor, th? he would not appoint a ma'n who i not a Democrat, and that he woul | it appoint a man who is a Roma ; Catholic." King, in Amazing ' Statement, Says Tanlac j Gave Them Wonderful J Relief at Once. p f "After making almost every possis hie effort to find relief from their e ills and failing in every inctancc, my 3 wife and my son, Charlie, were given e really wonderful relief hy just a few ^ doses of Tanlac," declared Mr. W. O. King, a farmer living between Andert son a"nd Pendleton. His address is f Pendleton, R. F. D. 1 Mr. King came into Evans' Pharmacy, at Anderson, to buy a bottle of 1 Tanlac, and while there told the Tans lac representative of the great value L> of this wonderful remedy had been to f his family. "I wish I had the money r to buy a dozen bottles this after" noon," he declared, "for 1 need to s ?ke Tanlac myself, but this is the " tight money time for the farmer and I will have to buy Tanlac now only for those who need it worst." L> Continuing, Mr. King said: "My e wife suffered from a generally run" down condition, complicated with oth er peculiar troubles and a very bad B case of indigestion. She had been in " ill health a long, time before she bee gan taking Tanlac, and I have paid v out $75 for medical services for her, e and she did not get as much benefit * then as she did from her first bottle 1 of Tanlac, which cost just one dollar. 1 "She had no energy and felt badly 1 all the time. She was not able, hardly, to do anything around the house, e 1 was under a doctor for a solid e year, but got no better. She now ' has taken two (2) bottles of Ta'nlac, 1 and it has proven in her case the best f medicine in the world. Her strength s has increased a great deal and her " appetite is better than it has been in years. Nothing she eats causes t her indigestion now. She sure is f pleased with the results. It is just ? wonderful the way she has improved. "My boy, Charlie, suffered one r> whole year with a very peculiar and d distressing trouble, which about a ^ dozen doses of Tanlac broke up. All P \st summer he could not work over y half a' day. He would net so weak a he would have to stop for the day. r This summer he was not any better. 0 Charlie's appetite would be good until not to the table, but then he would e become sick. Often at night his I" breath would almost leave him. He e lost i! lot of weight and strength. I e hhd taken hi'm to a dozen doctors, but he got no better. It was said he had !" nervous indigestion. y "I am certainly glad to tell you a these things for use in your adver ng, for it may show some poor sufferers the way to regain their health. I hope my words may help j some who suffer, a'nd you bet I can't say too much for Tanlac." For sale by Palmetto Drug Co., , Union; Buffalo Drug Co., Buffalo; K. D. Bailey, Carlisle; B. (1. Our tomato club had the pleasure of attending the tomato club institute j last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday e in Union, and must say it was all pleasure and success. There were 1 forty girl that attended. On account ^ of the high water some of the girls j could not attend. Some of the speak? ers failed to come on account of dec_ layed trains, but had with us several ? good speakers. Rev. Mr. Wagnon ie made our opening address Wednesday morning, which was enjoyed by all. On Thursday we had demonstra^ tions on cooking and Friday on canning. A good many visitors were . present on Thursday and Friday. J Must say the club girls surely enjoyed n the good talks that were made for them and feel sure that we know a lot more than we did about this work. >f Rev. Mr. Matheson gave us an excellent talk in behalf of our work, sr He explained our work and what to 'd do to achieve success was to do like the oak tree, to keep on growing, so I think that will be a good motto. All *p the girls were treated so nicely in the homes. Much credit is given to Mrs. Clifford for the nice reception given ie the club girls. Much credit and honor is goes to Miss Alsie Smith for her good >t work. 5- M rs. W. S. Newton and children of Greenville are visiting parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. M.
