Phone 106 MEXICAN TROOPS FIRED FIRST CARRIZAL SHOTS Troopers of the Tenth United States Cavalry Were Advansing in Battle Formation When Attacked. San Antonio, Texas, June 25.?Capt. Lewis Sydney Morey, commander of K troop of the Tenth cavalry, who, it was believed, died of loss of blood and thirst in a desert two miles from the scene of the encounter between American and Mexican troops at Carrizal, has made his way back safe to the American lines, according to a wireless message received by his wife tonight and transwitted to Gen. Funston Mrs. Morey, who now is at Austin, Texas, repeated the message to Gen Funston over the telephone. It read: "Somewhere in Mexico. Am back on the line with two men; safe." The message was signed "Sydney.' That, according to Mrs .Morey, was the manner in which Capt. More> signed all communications to her. A letter from Capt. Morey, writter while hiding in a hole near the scent of the fight at Carrizal after his forces had been broken and scattered, reached Gen. Funston through Gen. Persh ing earlier tonight. In that letter Capt Morey had described how, fearing ar ambush, the American troops whicl Capt. Chas. T. Boyd commanded, hat advanced in battle formation on th< Mexicans who had come out fron Carrizal during a parley over permis si'on for the Americans to pass through the town; how the Mexicans had opened fire and how the remain ing Americans after the first success advance had been forced to retreat anc scatter, each for himself. Army officers at headquarters hen hope that the return of Capt. Morej will serve to provide the missing links in the story of the engagement ai Carrizal and determine more com pletely the exact fate of each membei of the little reconnoitering expedition How Capt. Morey managed to mak< his way to the American column, t distance of over 80 miles, is not knowr here. Nothing to confirm rumors of i clash between Pershing's men anc Carranza troops was received by Gen Funston tonight and all was reportec quiet along the border. Four companies of engineers anc two companies of coast artillery ar rived at Fort Sam Houston within the last few days and two additional com panics of engineers, bringing witl them the remainder of the pontoor equipment sent from Washington bar racks are expected to arrive early to morrow. Forty carloads of pontoor equipment already has been receiver here. An armored motor truck tested oul here and said to have been found imperious to rifle fire has been assignee to the Nineteenth Infantry, six companies of which are stationed here It is reported in army circles that the order for aeroplanes given easterr manufacturers comprises at least 20C machines. Capt. Morey wrote the letter at 9:1E a. m. June 21, while hiding in a holt about 2,000 yards from the scene ol the battle. Capt. Morey was woundec and had another v/ounded man anc three unwounded troopers with him 'the three unwounded men wan picked up by a detachment undei Lieut. Ilenry A. Meyers, Jr., of the Tenth cavalry, and the letter brought to Gen. Pershing today. Morey Left to Hie. Capt. Morey was left to die upon the desert from thirst and his wounds The men abandoned him at his own order. The three unwounded men had carried him, according to their stories to Lieut. Meyers, from the hole where he had hidden and made their way nearly two miles from the battlefield, They were forced to stop and Capt, Morey, believing himself hopelessly wounded, ordered them to leave him. They also thought him about to die from loss of blood and thirst and obeyed. The stories of the rescued men to Lieut. Meyes were very vague about the details of the fight, according to Gen. Pershing's report to Gen. Funston. Capt. Morey's letter told of the joining of Troop C under Capt. Charles T. Boyd and Troop K under his own command at Ojo Santo Domingo June 20 and the advance together towards Carrizal June 21. He arrived in an open field a mile from Carrizal at 6:30 a. m. There they halted and Capt. Boyd sent a courier into Carrizal asking permissionof Gen. Felix Gomez to enter the town, saying he was going to Villa Ahumada. Gomez replied that he would not be allowed to enter the town but might make a detour around it. Fearing that they were about to be trapped by the Mexicans who had sallied out from the town during the parley, the American troops deployed in battle formation, mounted and moved forward. The Mexicans then opened fire. Capt. Boyd ordered his men to dismount and returned the fire, the engagement lasting about an hour. Both Troops Advance. Both C and K troops advanced, the former to the position occupied by a Mexican machine gun and the latter closing in to one side. K troop also was attacked from the flank, while a detachment of Mexicans from the town reached the rear of the American line and stampeded the led horses. The Mexicans succeeded in checking the American advance and the Americans first were forced to fall back and finally to scatter each I for himself. Following is the text of Capt. aMorey's letter: I "Carrizal, Mex., June 21, 1916, 9:15 I A. M. L "To Commanding Officer, Ojo Federico: j, "My troop reached Ojo Santo Domingo at 5:30 p. m., June 20. Met Troop C under Capt. Boyd. I came under Capt. Boyd's command and '? marched my troop in rear for Car- d ' rizal at 4:15 a .m. Reached open il ! field to southeast of town at 6:30. s "Capt. Boyd sent in a note re- E > questing permission to pass through ! the town. This was refused. Stated we could go. to the north but not ' east. Capt. Boyd said he was going ^ to Ahumada at this time. > "He was talking with Carranza 8 commander. Gen. Gomez sent a writ' ten message that Capt. Boyd was : bringing force in town and have a d n>?. t? 1 -r j c vuiucjGiH,c. v/tipi. uuyu icareu an a ambush. He was under the impres- n ' sion that the Mexicans would run as I ' soon us we fired. "We formed for attack, his inten- 1 tion being to move up to the line of 1 120 Mexicans on the edge of the town. 5 We formed C troop on the left in line " of skirmish, one platoon of K troop d on right of line and another K troop * platoon on extreme right a little to ? 1 the rear. ? 1 Mexicans Open Fire. ^ ' "When we were within 300 yards s ; the Mexicans opened fire and a strong 1 one before we fired a shot; then we opened up. I hey did not run, but c 5 to make a long account short, after C 5 an hour's fight, in which both troops p had advanced, C troop to position of t ' Mexican machine gun and K troop 1 closing in slightly to the left, we were very busy on the right keeping ^ i off a flank attack. A group of MexT icans left town, went around our rear ' and our led horses left at a gallop, t "At about 9 o'clock one platoon of " Troop K, which was on our right, fell r back. Sergeant said he could not stay ^ there. Both platoons fell back about ^ J 1,000 yards to the west and then, to- ^ 1 gether with some men of Troop C, T 1 who were there, these men scattered. 1 "I was slightly wounded. Capt. ^ | Boyd, a man told me, was killed. Nothing was seen of Lieut. Adair af- v ter light started, so man I saw stated. v ' I am hiding in a hole 2,000 yards from field and have one other wounded man and three men with me. (Signed) "Morey, , ; "Captain." d In transmitting Capt. Morey's let- 0 1 ter Gen. Pershing said: ? 1 "The three men referred to by " Morey are the three men who had the " above message in their possession. 1 The wounded man was from C troop, d ' and was shot through the knee. Lieut, o Meyers reports that the three men r ^ were rather vague as to where they I " <bad left Capt. Morey, but stated that ' or^ the# night of the 21st they had car* riea n im two miles; that Morey be- L * came weak, could not go further, and ? 1 told them to leave him. They thought ^ 1 he was dying from loss of blood and ' lack of water. Meyer reconnoitered 20 miles east of Santa Maria, but ' found nothing. Out of grain and for- c 5 age, borses in bad shape, he had to 8 ^ return." c ' "Gen. Funston issued no orders to ' Gen. Pershing tonight. It was observed at headquarters <j * that Capt. Morey's note was addressed o to his immediate superior, the com- r 5 manding officer at Ojo Federico, and I ' it is surmised that Lieut. Meyer sent the letter to the commanding officer , at Din Rnrlari"/! ho in turn fn??ra?/l 1 inp: it to Gen. Pershing. This would explain the fact that the letter ap ' parently was not delivered to Gen. j ' Pershing by Lieut. Meyers on his re! turn with the stragglers found at San ! Luis ranch last night. ('apt.
