German Squadron of 33 Vessels Said to Have Attacked British Patrol. Copenhagen, June 1 (via London, June 2) (Delayed by Censor).?According to The Politiken, a Danish steamer arrived today (Thursday) at Friedricshaven which had witnessed a battle in the North sea. The steamer reports that yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon 120 miles off Hansholm it was stopped by two British corpeuo douis io nave its papers examined. At the same moment a large German fleet appeared and the British warships immediately prepared for action. The German fleet, which appeared at full speed, consisted of five large modern dreadnoughts, eight cruisers and 20 torpedo boats and destroyers. Suddenly the Germans began firing and shells splashed around the torpedo boat without effect. The British ships went westward, pursued by the German fleet. At 5 o'clock the cannonade was renewed and continued until 9 o'clock in the evening. Two Zeppelins were seen going at full speed northward to the scene of the battle. SOUTHERN RAILWAY EARNINGS. Washington, D. C., June 1.?During April, 1916, Southern Railway company disbursed for labor, material, supplies and other purposes $3,195,831.95, of which $2,674,058.09 or 83.67 per cent was paid to individuals and industries located in the South. This amount represents more than 61 pe rcent of the moneys paid to the company for transportation by those located on the lines, according to figures announced today by Comptroller A. II. Plant, showing the results of operation of the Company for the month of April, 1916, and for the period of ten months ended April 30, 1916, compared with the same month and period in 1915 and 1914, exclusive of interest, rentals and other income charges.
