MAKES BONE KEY TO LEAVE PRISON GUN NELLS EXTRACTS LIBERTY FROM DINNER. Columbian Held on Charge of Robbing Tapp's Store Escapes From Penitentiary. L. H. Gunnells, awaiting trial on a charge of breaking and entering the James L. Tapp store, escaped from the South Carolina State penitentiry at an early hour yesterday morning. Blood hounds followed his trail up the canal bank, down the Broad river road, through Camp Fornance, and to Elmwood avenue, where it was lost. He had not been recaptured at a late hour last night. Gunnells has tuberculosis and was placed in the State penitentiary while awaiting trial, that he might receive the benefits of the prisop sanitarium. About 2:3 Oo'clock yesterday morning the guard in making his rounds discovered that Gunnells had escaped. Investigation proved that he prized an iron bar with a board and escaped through a south window. From there he made his way to a door at the foot of a lookout tower on the western wall and with a bone key, made from a meat bone, he opened the lock and had an'easy time climbing the stairs. With sheets that he had taken from the hospital he made a rope and j swung down the wall to liberty. Prison guards are not stationed in .r the lookout tower at night for the prisoners- are all locked up in the cells or the hospital. The inside grounds are patroled. The guard on duty at the sanitarium had passed by Gunnells' window about 30 minutes before and all was well. Upon his return Gunnells was gone. It was presume that the escaping prisoner watched the guard and knew that his beat took him away half an hour. A clever part of his getaway was the making of the bone key. This saved Gunnells from climbing the inside of the wall and also gave him opportunity to make his rope and securely fasten it while hidden in the lookout tower. The prisoners had been given meat and Gunnells evidently sliDDed a bone. It is nresumed that he filed it against the iron bars. I 1 Gunnells is a Columbian. ANOTHER "COTTONSEED FEED". A reader asks the following question regarding a socalled cottonseed feed: "What about this feed for dairy cows and the 'guaranteed analysis'? Is it cheaper than cottonseed meal to be used in connection with silage?" Guaranteed Analysis Protein?minimum 20 per cent Fats , ZZ 4 "per cent Crude fiber 23 per cent Carbohydrates 30 per cent Composed of cottonseed meal and cottonseed hulls. No one can answer the question positively as to whether it is cheaper than cottonseed meal, for the simple reason that our inquirer does not state the price, either of this feed or of cottonseed meal, on his market. It is quite safe to assume, however, since this feed is made up of cotton seed nulls and meal and only contains about one-half the protein con- jj tained in high-^rade cottonseed meal, ^ that it is not cheaper than cotton- j seed meal. K It is one of those socalled cottonseed feeds which, while complying with the law, because the laws are ^ defective, are put on the market, be- n cause the manufacturers know that they can }?et more for their hulls and meal mixed in this way, than they can ret for them sold separately. They o merely take advantage of the i^nor- it unce or carelessness of the buyers and _ the defective laws to sell a product for more than it is worth. Usually these " soenlled cottonseed feeds contain only a little more than one-half the feeding value of cottonseed meal but sell for only $.'1 to $f? a ton less than standard cottonseed meal. V/ith hijrhcrrade cottonseed meal selling for *37.50 a ton, a feed like this should not sell for more than $'20 a ton nt the outside. THEY ALL DEMAND IT. Haney, on February 26th. Mr. Rollins served in the Confederate army during the Civil war and vas shocked by a bomb, so has been 3artially paralyzed ever since. He vas in a hospital in Columbia when hat city was laid in ashes during Sherman's raid. He has very good lealth for a man of his age, although le is almost blind and being paralyzed :oo, can't get about very much with>ut help; but he has a splendid mem>ry and still has a will to go. D .Wakefield, for about three years pastor of the Second Baptist church, yesterday submitted his resignation at a meeting of the congregation'immediately after the regular morning service. His resignation was accepted and will become effective May 31. Mr. Wakefield will return to his home in Shelbyville, Ky., for the purpore of recuperating from the condition of poor health he has been in for the last year. He will not take charge of a parish.
