Vernon estate as a national memorial, was presented to the State Senate Friday, Feb. 18th, by the S. C. Division of die Society. The portrait has been placed in the sputheast corner of the senate chamber. The portrait is from a photo painted by John Stolle of Dresden, Saxony, in Charleston in 1890. This is :he first portrait of a woman to grace ;he walls of the chambers of the general assembly, already graced with portraits of John C. Calhoun, Wade Hampton, Martin W. Gary and a ?reat galaxy of other illustrious South Carolinians. The speech of presentation was made by Mrs. J. J. Pringle of "Chi ora Woo l," Georgetown, daughter of jov. F. W. Allston. There is only >ne regent from each State, and Mrs. Pringle represents the Palmetto State n the Alt. Vernon Association. She is low vice regent and general secretary . >f this society.
