Strive th?- harder, if the task be heavy. The speeches that are being made by President Wilson on his lecturing tour evidence the fact that the man at the head of this nation is wise and great. The utter absence of play to the galleries- the clear, sound prose*"t i tion of facts and the manifest humility of the man stamp him a man among men, a safe leader and sane builder. It becomes more and more apparent that he will be the next president?that he will succeed himself. This he will do for the reason ^ that even his enemies can find no reasonable ground for their opposition. This president of the United States is a big man. And he is "every inch a man." DO NOT TAKE OUR WORD. Mr. Merchant, when your customer comes in to purchase bacon, flour, hams, dress goods, shoes, hats, fruits or any other article of merchandise, the first thing you do is to "show the goods." You do not expect a customer to buy a "pig in a bag." You know your customer has a right to view the pig before paying therefor. inow, why should you buy advertising space without knowing what you buy? We do not ask you to tal^? our word for it; we do not ask you to buy a pig in a bag" when you contract with us for space* We believe it is your right to know just what you are getting, and we are ready, for we invite your inspection of our mail list. We do not ask you to advertise because we have "something like" thirtyone hundred circulation. We ask you to purchase advertising space because we HAVE thirty-one hundred circulation; and we offer to any and all advertisers, prospective or present, the absolutely proof. We offer in evidence our mail list. We would not sell it to you; we would not allow you to copy it, but we will allow you to take all the time you care to take in examining it. You are welcome to count and check up, so that you may know what you buy when you buy space in The Union Times. You may be "from Missouri," so much the better. We are "from Missouri" when it comes to paying out hard cash. The man from Missouri is the man we are after. He looks good to us." PREPARE I OR THE DAY.OF NONPRODUCTION. There is no more pathetic figure than that of a man who has "wasted his substance in riotous living," and having come to old age, finds himself face to face with stern want. Hungry and clothed in rags, the day of production pone, pone also the alertness of mind necessary to earn money ?such a character is to he pitied. It is this sorrow for the aped and helpless that lies at the bottom of very much of the lepislation that seeks to help the old. the infirm and the unfortunate. And the lepislation is pood, as far as it poes. Put it is a remedy, not a cure; it does not pet at the root of the disease. There is a phase of the matter too often overlooked. The man himself is larpely to blame, frequently wholly to blame for his sad plipht. In the day of his strenpth he was a wastrel. He was without thoupht, prudence, care. The days of younp manhood were reparded liphtly; money was considered a thrnp to he used in the pratification of the fleshly ar.petites. No th ate 1.1 was taker, fi r the morrow, and when "the morrow" turns into "today", the poor piece of drift wood is called upon to reap that v hich he has sown. He used no forethoupht, and, as a consequence, he must face an unpleasant crisis. Interest, lonp deferred, calls for heavy payments. It is not much use to tell the old. wornout, helpless man that he has been foolish. These lines are not for him. But the young man, strong in limb, alert in mind, optimistic in vision,, he is the one to take heed. He needs to hear the warning. He needs I i realize that the present is his golden opportunity. He should begin to lay the foundation for a competency in old age. He owes that to himself and he owes it to his community. If he will not heed, he must needs come to grief and be a burden upon the community. . SARAH ELIZABETH HARRIS. < ?. Little Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of Paul and Sibbie Harris, was born Jan. 5 '21st, 11?1 I, and died Jan. 17th, 191t>. ' She was sick about two months. The parents did all that they could to save her, but death baffled all the skill of the faithful physician, and laughed at the efforts of the family and the ? loving and faithful efforts of the , friends, it was like a little flower, just beginning to bloom; plucked from their garden, to beautiful heaven. Ah. why should we mourn her death, when she i- in heaven, romping the streets of the heavenly city. Th?* whole community joins in loving sympathy for the grief-stricken fether and mother, in this their sad hour of trial. Thank (lod, we are not like those that Jesus died and rose again, even who have no hope; *or if we believe hat Jesus died and rose again, even ' so them also who sleep in Him will (lo<l bring together with Him. 1st Thes. 1:1.1-14. The little tender bud was laid away by loving hands in the cemetery at Wesley Chapel, in the Helton, Methodist charge. Burial services conducted hy the pastor. J. R. Copeland. Jan. 31, 191f>. ? 1 Mr. R. V. Gist of Carlisle was in Union on business Thursday. There was a partial eclipse of the sun visible here about 11 o'clock. Southern train. No. 1), was delayed here for a short while Thursday morning owing to the derailment of a freight car at Bonham. TO BAPTIST PASTORS OF UNION COUNTY. At a meeting of some of the pastors held some time ago it was decided to meet the first Monday in February for the purpose of organizing a pastors' conference in the association. On account of the laymen's meeting in Co- _ lumbia next Monday it is thought best i to postpone this meeting till Monday, February 14th, at 1'2 o'clock. The meeting will be held in the parlor of the First church and all Baptist pastors in the association, and Baptist preachers of good standing are invited to meet with us. Geo. P. White, Pastor First Baptist Church. Mr .B. G. Wilburn of Cross Keys ^ is quite sick. He is one of the county's leading citizens and has a wide circle of friends who will be grieved to hear of his illness and who hope for I him a speedy recovery. RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT. Our Junior Division of the Missionary Society meets today under the shadow of a recent sorrow, caused by the death of one of our members, Har- ~ riet Wagnon. * In token of our love for her, and in appreciation of her gentle influence, First. We sorrow when we think we shall see her sweet face no more in this world. That while she was spared only twelve short years, she gavcj sunshine to all she met. 2nd. That her going should not speak sadness for it was too beautiful so quietly, so gently did she slip ( away that it was like the last soft sweet chords of a song ami the memory of her is like the sweet aroma of a lovely flower. 3rd. That we deeply sympathize with her bereaved family and may each one of us live so that we will meet her and he forever with the Lord. 4th. That a page in the minute hook he dedicated to her memory and a copy sent to the family and both ~ the county papers. Frances McCall, Alice Arthur, Mary Dunbar, Charles Murphy, ' James Arthur. See if tongue is coated; this is a sure sign its little stomach, liver and bowels are clogged with sour waste. When listless, pale, feverish, full of cold, breath bad, throat sore, doesn't eat, sleep or art naturally, has stomach-ache, indigestion, diarrhoea, give a teaspoonful of "California Syrup of Figs," and in a few hours all the _ foul waste, the sour bile and ferment- ^ ing food passes out of (ho howvls and ai have a well and playful child again.
