CROSS KEYS
Cross Keys, Aug. 17.?The 25th of
August will soon be here and everyone
who has qualified can have their
say as to who will be governor of
South Carolina and who shall represent
us in the United States senate. I
do not know who will be the successful
ones, but I sincerely trust the
voters of Union county will considex
qualifications. It looks to me that
choosing men to fill the various offices
from a standpoint of fitness is almost
a thing of the past. We are
drawing factional lines too strong
for our own welfare. To say that a
man shall not receive our support because
he belongs to the other faction
when he is the best man in the race
is a wrong spirit and one that will
cause us to have regrets in the future.
In this township people are giving
the political situation more thought
than they are their souls. I think
that after the elections are over we

lives and make some changes for the
better .
There is some kind of disease going
the rounds that is playing havoc with
the chickens. A man in this community
declares that his rooster was
walking along and fell dead of his
own accord or because he could not
live any longer. It was the experience
of the writer this morning to
find more than a dozen of our flock
of fowls had died in less than twentyfour
hours, when two days ago they
were apparently well and were eating
heartily.
Mrs. I.ula Craig died last Friday
morning and was buried Saturday at
New Hope church at Cross Anchor.
She leaves a husband and many
friends to mourn her departure. She
was the daughter of Marion Craig
and had been married less than a
year.
Mr. J. Gist Prince is building four
new rooms to his house, which when
completed will add materially to the
comfort of his home. Mr. Edd Stevens
is doing the work.
On yesterday as Mr. and Mrs. Thon.
II. Stevens were returning from
church, the mule they were driving
turned suddenly up a steep bank and
turned the buggy over, but fortunately
they were not hurt.

Kelton, Aug. 11.?The drought was
broken at our place on August 1,
when wc had a heavy rain and have
had plenty sinoe. Crops have put on
new life since the rain, but in ou.
community will be short as a whole.
The people are talking politics and
having a good time going to picnics
and barbecues.
Miss Rhoda Comer died last Friday
And WAS hlirioH at Pathlatiam
on Saturday. The funeral services
were conducted by Rev. J. B. Gibson.
She is survived by four brothers and
two sisters and they have the sympathy
of the community.
Mr. J. H. Foster of Spartanburg
has been visiting relatives and friends
on the Ridge last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Garner were
down to see their mother, Mrs. W. H.
Gault last week.
The stopping of the mills for ten
days gives the operatives some needed
rest and also a chance to visit old
friends. The mills ought to stop one
week in August every year and give
the operatives this much needed rest.
