T WILKINSVILLE |j Mr. Editor: For about forty years H I have been a reader of The Times i|J and I am satisfied that it is a better paper today than it ha&ever been, first newspaper correspondence for I it was done under the administration of the venerable Robert M. Stokes, who for many years was the editor. I would be glad to tell the readers how Mr. Stokes drew me into the corps of correspondence for the paper. He said I had a tern for newspaper work and he waited me to develop it. He wanted a correspondent in each section of the county (of which this North Pacolet was then a part) and I, with some others could represent this section. I told him L' did not think I could get up a letter that would interest his readers on in 1 1 ? 1. Al any neip oui me paper. "Xes, you can," he said, "an account of a dog1 fight would be read with much inter- | est by people away from the scene." By the way, I want to say right here that the town (or rather city of Union now) owes R. M. Stokes a debt it can never pay. He was a pioneer of the progressive spirit that made Union what it is today. He was the first man we knew of to advocate the building of a cotton mill at Union-e said it would start a movement thJl there was no telling what it would"" amount to or where it would end. He was really laughed at by men who ' had the money to do what he said. Time and again he brought it up, in fact he kept hammering at it until others began to see that there was something in it and the progressive spirit took root and Union began to grow and from that day to this we have held in high esteem the wonderful influence of a well-conducted newspaper?one that stands for some-' thing. Mr. Stokes hadn't the money himself (for we are told that literary men are always poor and generally ugly) but he had brains that will always count. But the time came when North Pacolet and sections of York and Spartanburg counties, the best portions of them of course, thought it would be advisable to untie and form a new ennntv anH up a county government of their own, with a court house more convenient than those of either of the old counties. This we have found to all concerned. But while it is true we are separated by county lines still our high esteem of the people of old Union county has remained in tact and we note their progressive spirit with a great deal of pleasure. We believe it takes small counties as well as smaller farms to make a happy, pros- ' perous an<J progressive people, as a whole we have better roads, better schools and many other public con- 1 veniences by reason of them. Mr. Jeff Hughes, who is well and favorably known in Union county and who spends a good portion of his time in Cherokee with relatives and friends, gave us a call yesterday. He is pretty well advanced in years but he has never yet had the measles an^ he is dreading it. Sanders, whom I we highly esteem. 1 Mr. and Mrs. Asa Blackwell, of ] York county, visited their relatives in ! the Fairforest section this week and ! they are highly pleased with their trip and the people they met on the | trip. Haynes has three lady assistants. This school that has been operating for | quite awhile.
