All New Goot jR. / POLK MILLER DEAD; NOTED ENTERTAINER RICHMOND.VA., Oct. 20.?Polk Miller, a Richmond business man, known thr>.jf;hout the south for his plantation stories of war times, and . his performances on the banjo at many Confederate reunions, died suddenly at his home here tonight. He was (59 vears old. In late years Mr. Miller h^d been pressed into service by the chamber of commerce to help entertain thirty or forty national organizations which held their annual conventions here. With a banjo he frequently accompanied bis "darky" quartette and related many original and amusing stories in the negro dialect. He appeared in nearly every southern state often with Col. Tom Booker, another Confederate soldier. A week ago he was the chief entertainer at a smoker tendered the American (las institute by the city of Richmond. For twenty years or more he traveled over the south but seldom appeared out of that territory, because, as he explained, his dialect stories were not understood. NEWS FROM WHITMIRE. The parlor was decorated with ivy, mistletoe and holly berries?making a rare picture, bathed in the mild and mellow light of wax tapers. The beauty of the room was excelled only by the bride's face. She wore a tailored suit of brown silk, with gloves and shoes to match, holding in her hand a bride's bouquet of exquisite roses. NES, LOSES BOTH EYES IN GENERAL FIGH^ I James Brown is Totally Blind .and in Critical Condition?Two Men Arrested in the Case. f COLUMBIA, Oct. 20.?-Logan Brannon and William Trapp, two young whitp men, are being held by the Richland county officers in connection with an unusual case. James Brown is in a local hospital with both eyes out. Physicians said today that the eyeballs had been cut or gouged out by some one. He is totally blind and is considered tn Ho in a critical condition. According to the Richland officials Brown lost his eyeballs in a general fight in a gin house near Blythewood, in the upper section of the county, Saturday night. Brannon and Trapp were arrested in connection with the affair. A preliminary has not been held. "The two men, Brannon and Trapp, have been placed in the Richland county jail pending the outcome of the injuries to Brown. "I do not know yet what charge they will be held on," said Sheriff McCain today. Richland officers are investigating the case. Came Near to Drowning. Margaret, the sixteen-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Humphries, came very near to being drowned Saturday morning. The little' girl was playing with the baby out on the back porch and fell into a tub half full of water.
