' O ] The man who tries is the man worth while. ' O 1 "Do your best, your dead level 1 best." Then you need not be ashamed < if reverses come. < O 1 Keep back the harsh word; it will 1 hurt you more than it will hurt your 1 supposed "enemy." O The tramp works harder trying to ( avom worK tnan does the honest . toiler who seeks work. , 0 2 Justice, even-handed, sure and re- J lentless, is the joy of the honest soul T -^. .-.and a terror to the evil doer. 0 A juryman who fears God and rev- j erences the law is a stronger safe- 1 guard than a battallion of soldier*. ] 0 < The lack of reverence, often manifested by the youth of today is one index pointing to rough weather in < the future. * U J Progress, our worthy contempo- j rary, celebrated its fourteenth birth- J day last week. We extend best wisTt. es. .May the future bring prosper- ^ ity, happiness and all else that is 1 worth while. c O Now that the new postoflice build- f ing is beginning to show up, it ap- ; pears more and more clearly that we are to have a gem of a building, one v that willl be in keeping with the near, by handsome court house. \ 0 ^ We hear a great deal these days ' about the oppression by the employer j and the hard grind in which the em- v ployee abides. Tut! The shoe is frequently on the other foot. The maker v of the payroll is often the man wno 1 sweats blood. If the average em- c ployee sought to render faithful service there would be better conditions I all around. ' I O Do not fail to attend the address ^ to be delivered by Judge Memminger s {it thft onnrt VlAlien i *> rv nf v?v VWM.V **vua? * * ?VIC*JT ?TVIIIItK ?V 8 o'clock. The address will be of es- * pecial interest to the intelligent citi- 1 zens. The address is to be of a lit- j erary character, and in no sense a ti- ^ rade against lawlessness. Ladies and gentlemen are invited to come. JNo i charge for admission. ( 0 Not one single farmer has voluntarily spoken a word to us for or j against a cotton warehouse. This has ( been our experience on more than one ' occasion when we have undertaken to | advocate some move that we believed ( would work to the benefit of the far- j mer. Perhaps, Mr. Farmer, you are f making up your mind as to the proposed plan, or is it that such matteis ( ?re utterly uuimkiu your pian 01 procedure. A bit of adverse criticism ] would at least show interest. t Don't forget that the city author- _ ities are making earnest effort to J lave Union arrayed in clean garF nents by April 1. What are you dong to cooperate in this movement. 'Clean-up Day", April 1, is rapidly ipproaching. Have all the litter -aked up and ready to be carted iway. Let's begin now a war that >vill put mosquitoes and flies out of justness me coming summer. 11 win say in health dividends. O Solicitor Hill had a perfect right to decline to have Ex-Solicitor Otts to assist him in the Coleman trial. We see nothing: unethical, inelegant ir even lacking in good breeding In lis refusal. He was asked by some good citizens if it would be acceptable to him to have Mr. Otts assist lim. He said that while he and Mr. Otts had maintained a perfectly friendly relation throughout the *Q mna i rrrt anH worn haw imAn friAMi* I >i UtIU ?*Vt V tivr *T upvil JL * IVyllU" [y terms, he declined the profferea assistance. We most assuredly ei*lorse his position. The very fact that it was Solicitor Hill's first court and the first trial of notable importance in that court made it bad form \ for over-zealous, albeit worthy, citzens to put it up to Solicitor Hill ;o have Mr. Otts assist him. Solicitor \ Hill did exactly what he should hav? lone?declined with thanks. And, by the way, we wish to com- A mend the earnestness and zeal of the lew solicitor. We did not support aim in the campaign. We voted and worked for Mr. Otts, his opponent. That was our choice and we were ^ jut exercising our right as a citizen. _ But Mr. Hill was chosen. We cheer- F 'ully accepted the situation, and the :onduct of Mr. Hill is vindicating >ur saneness in so doing. Solicitor Hill will make good, or we are much _ mistaken in summing up the situa- 1 don. 0 West Springs News Letter. ^ nrest opnngs, reD. i?.? ine west Springs community was the scene of i shooting affray on last Sunday norning.
