O If you will glance in The Times window you will see two of the largest lemons your eyes ever fell upon. They were handed us by a pretty young lady and are county grown. O Heaven send us deliverance from the anthracite coal combine. Attor ney General Wickersham seems to think the recent finding of the courts will accomplish this much desired end. It is to be hoped that he is correct in his supposition. O Governor Cicasc ordered the "Social Club" in Lexington raided and $500 worth of beer and whiskey seized and two men arrested. Perhaps these men were not "his friends." It is a pity that His Excellency does not open his eyes to the fact that there are so-called "social clubs" all over the State, and no doubt, if he would do his duty, he would find that they are operated on the same scale as those in Lexington. O "I AM RESOLVED THAT?" I will speak in kindness, this glad Christmas Day and all the days succeeding. I will smile, or be found trying so to do, this Christmas Day, and each .of the days to follow of my earthly pilgrimage. I will act towards all my fellows as, in my heart, I wish to have them act towards me this joyous Christmas Day and all the days thereafter. I will think less of myself and more of others, this Christmas Day and for all the coming days. I will walk with an humble heart before my God this Christmas Day and so will I walk each other day. I will try to find some good in all and see as little of the evil as I can in them this Christmas Day, and for all the days yet to be. I will try to carry my part ?f the burdens of others and rejoice in my strength so do to, this Christmas Day. o CHRISTMAS IS COMING! Christmas morning is almost here. Just one week from today it will have arrived! It is the time of all times for the giving of gifts, and for the receiving of like tokens of iesteem. It is a gladsome time. It is a time when children are happy, supremely happy. It is the spirit of kindness and of fellowship which takes hold upon old and young. Th* older people are made to rejoice through the gladness that fills the hearts of the young- Many of us have passed beyond the years of childhood. The things that brought joy to us in the long ago fail to re vive that joy at this late day. But we are happy, never-the-less in the joy that fills the hearts of the young. Even the stern, hard battle of life has failed to deaden our hearts to the joy that rings true in the hearts of the little children. Their Joys are ours; the happy smile that lifts up the face of the children finds its reflection in our own faces. Thank God for the coming of One who could so fill the world with rejoicing! Thank Clod for the Christ spirit: it 13 beautirul and it is' healthful and helpful in a world of hard paths and sharp thorns. It is when we grow to be men and women that we begin to ufidfihstand the true significance of all the Great Teacher has done, tie has done more than give the world a philosophy. He gives it life, life that is beautiful, life that is supreme in its unselfishness and its thought of others. More and more men are beginning to realize that to be happy one must be helpful; to serve one's own best ends we must have the welfare of others at heart. Truly, it would be a sorry world without the Christ spirit. "Every man for himself", looks like good philosophy, hut it is in reality the highway to death. The path of safety, of happiness, of soul-rest, leads in the other direction. Here's wishing each and all a merry Christmas. May the sunshine he bright, the joys be multiplied for each one this joyous day of all the year. Let us forgive our enemies; let us look for the good in everything; let us turn our feet intp paths of righteousness; let us take a fresh grip upon faith and love. 0 PUBLIC SERVICE. (Editorial from the Asheville (N. C. Citizen) In recent years the great public service corporations have taken new departures, in that they demand of their employees that in all their relations to the public uniform courtesy and politeness shall prevail. The result has been that a higher state of efficiency has been attained in all departments of public utilities, and what is more, the "man with a irrourh". he whose chief interest in life has been to find fault with everything and everybody with which and with whom he has no personal concern, has found his field rapidly narrowing. It is more often than not the case, however, that the public, or rather a certain portion of it, shows scant courtesy where it desires and demands much. Take for instance, the telephone service which is anathema of all man kind, whether it deserves it or not. As is generally known, telephone operators, and they are nearly always of the gentler sex, are required to be "polite at all times and under all circumstances." It is a writ ten law that a telephone girl must take even foul abuse from some drunken loafer without reply. One can regard that rule as he sees fit, but. it is a poor rule that doesn't work both ways. The public is impatient with the telephone girl, for the most part because she is invisible, and again, because of conditions over which she has no control, such as a neglectful subscriber who fails to answer his telephone when he is called. In case of this sort the telephone operator is absolutely blameless, yet we heard men, and women, too, oerate "central" and later report her to higner authorities because "they couldn't get any answer." In many cases it happens that a man is out of his office when his telephone number is called, yet the unfortunate operator is blamed for this too. < Telephone users should at all times iU.i 1 liA caiciiu mui, tuui ic.iy ttiiu politeness which they demand from those who serve them. Life at its best is not a rosy one for the telephone girl, as a visit to any city exchange will readily show. The trouble is that the "dear public" knows so little of what it is talking about when it "kicks" from force of habit, that a little education in the sphere of public utilities would go a long way and might accomplish some good. The foregoing remarks are appliable to all lines of public service?the railroads, street car systems, and-telegraph lines.
