Gileath, inspector of police; ex-jaller A. V. l'hillips, of the cit ypolice and leuben Gosnell, a magistrate's contable, were arrested tonight on warants charging them with assisting faughn to escape from the county ail last June. The three men were iaul?d through the streets of Greenille to the jail where they were marcerited for an hour or more. Five substantial business men, cornlanding more than $1,000,000 cash, iter rushed to the jail from their repetitive churches together with hunreds of other citizens who crowded bout the prison and clamored as to /ho should be the first to sign bonds f $l,000.#for each of the parties. Reeling is intense tonight and exitement is running higher than it las at any time during the past few ays of sensational happinings in ireenville. Rumor spread like wildiire on the treets about noon 'that arrests were o be made in connection with the esape of Vaughn from Greenville's ail some time ago. Warrants were rawn up late in the afternoon and ust before night were signed by Magstrate Samuel Stradley anil placed in he hands of sheriff elect llendrix lector, for service. The deputy set ut to apprehend his men and located 'oliceman Phillips first at Green avenie and Pendleton streets as the oficer was going from his home to the olice station. He was arrested and onveyed to the jail and locked in a ell. Rector then set about to locate Mr. lilreath finding him at the point near he grand opera house. Both got in a lack and started toward the jail. As he two came through Main street a remendous throng gathered and aced behind the vehicle shouting and naking the night ring with their cries. >lr. It was Repeatedly stated at the jail tonight by the arresting officers, the prosecutor and others interested in the case that Blease had ordered the arrests to be made that day. The three warrants were sworn out by Dr. W. L. Mauldin ,and each one charges the respective defendants with "aiding a prisoner to escape." The specific charges in the warrant against Gosnell and Phillips ar& that they assisted T. U. Vaughn to escape from the Greenville county jail. The warrant against Mr. Gilreath charges that the defendant "did convey into the Greenville county jail tools adapted or useful to aid a prisoner to make his escape with intent to facilitate the escape of a prisoner." The witnesses in each case are J. Perry Poole, Hendrix Rector, John S. Hunsinger and T. U. Vaughn. IS UNION SATISFIED?
