MILLINGS 29 WEST MAIN STREET LOST SOLDIER NOW WILD MAN. In Ten Years' Isolation Arthur Britton Loses Nearly All Semblance of Human Being. (Poughkeepsie Dispatch to New York Herald.) Almost nude, his head and face covered with hair and armed with a club and barking like a fox, Arthur Britton, 40 years old, who has been missing more than ten years, was found today living in a cave in the Pawling mountains. He was committed to the Hudson river state hospital this afternoon and the physicians there say he has reverted into a veritable wild man. * : !VU Britton, because of his isolated life, has almost lost the power of speech. His mind is shattered, and although he is thin he possesses the muscular strength of a giant. He lived in a hole in the rocks in the side of the mountains, and it required four hours' work to induce him to come out. It was the calling of his brother, Irving Britton, that at last induced him to appear. Then captors fell upon him and bound him with ropes. Britton's mind became affected while serving in the Philippines in the Spanish-American war. Soon after he returned to Pawling, after the war and began to wander into the woods and camp out. Later he would stay away several days at a time. Eventually he made his home in the open and seldom returned home. Ten years ago his family lost all trace of him. Tive years ago the mountain residents began to tell stories of seeing a wild man in the woods and fields. The story circulated through the whole region, but no attempt was made to make a captive of him because the residents were afraid. The men, they said, raced through the underbrush and barked like a fox. At times they said, he climbed tall trees. , Britton's family finally heard ol the wild man, and Irving BrjjLton went into the mountains to investigate. Deputy sheriffs made severa trips into the mountains to capture the wild man, but day after day h< eluded them. Justice Davis sent for Sheriff Town send and Under Sheriff Hornbeck am today, accompanied by Dr. Merrimai of the Hudson river State hospital who is a hypnotist, he went to th cave. The entrance to the cave wa only three feet wide and piled in fron of it were bowlders. A dugout furthe ?1\d. the .mountainside was Brittons home, in aiemcnt ?rtt ton barks like a fox.
