Sprouse, health officer for Union and for the past month serving also as a policeman, was dismissed from the service by Mayor Duncan Saturday in the following letter: "Union, S. C., "Feb. 3, 1912. "Mr. R. N. Sprouse, ' ? "Uhion, S. C. "Dear Sir: This is to notify you that your services as an officer in the city of Union is hereby severed. "The city treasurer will pay you all that is due you up to and including Feb. 2. "Respectfully, "T. C. Duncan. "Mayor City of Union, S. C." Mr. ' Sprouse says the mayor wanted him to servo as policeman md health offioer both at a salary jf $35.00 while the regular policemen were paid $45.00. This Mr. Sprodse refused to do and the mayor iischarged him. The health offi:er's position paid $35.00; the mayor wished to have the officer serve as policeman also and at the same salary he got as health officer.
