I know nothug. Indeed, the orfegin of evil is a uestion that has puzzled moralists, lieologians and ^metaphysicians roin time immemoriXil. Just when he devil )>cgau to ?l>e, whence he anie and what he wa?-> made for I mow not. Scholars <!?f olden times 'laimed that there weil'e two forces n the world, good anJd had, cma-! luting from two soArces, a good j ;od and an evil oil c; these were lisciples of dualistic ^lmories. Still ithers who think Jphilosophiea ?y.: laim that mati'ff disobedience i rcated within the .Individual man i demon spirit, and! that all men 1 |H)ssess a personal d-I'vil. And still ithers believe thai/ (iod, the one righteous God is tfne beginning of 1 ill things, Ix>th phiysical and mcta- i physical. Conseqivently, He is the i Creator of the diYvil. Well, let these things be as Ithey may, the I fact remains that tliore is a devil, ; and he is much in Jvidence in the ! world of thought And action. A thousand personal dtrvils there may he, and no doubt fare, but 1 ami convinced that therci is one great, f big, powerful center devil. "A devil there is 1 am sure, who for some inscrutable reason has a share j in the ruling of this planet?a devil who delights in mocking us from I the cradle to the grave." believing that ft devil does exist, ! what then is he, where does he i dwell, and what is his work? First, he must, of course, be a spirit; for, his territory of work and action is in the -spirit realm; i.: ,.ww> it ft 1 ^ t 11 m tfllll II r*V III I\ 1 UIIIII4JIUOUIIUU, all demand it. To hold his grip upon the lines of so many lives, he must he a spirit. The idea of a physical body is contrary to reason. Certainly, these human representations of his Satanic majesty, such as we see in "Faust" are very ' good and true. They convey an idea that is indeed impressive. With horns and hoof, forked tail, at grinning malicious face, and bodily color of burning red,?we are possed with an idea not soon banished. Anyhow, he is a spirit and rules spirits. As to the nature of this spirit we have certain foundation for knowledge. It is a devilish nature:?but there my expression becomes tautologous. The^, the.nature of this spirit is the quintessence of all meanness and visciousness; all that is wrong, unholy and low; and the summasummarum of all those attributes and characteristics pertaining to morality not possessed by God. tfameall God's attributes, take their antonyms, add thyse together and ydU have the devil's nature. The devil's work is of three kinds; viz, to oppose all goodj to tear down good Work, and to sug gist plans ana help carry out evil work. "No sooner is a temple built to God, than the devil builds a chapel hard by" is a fact beyond dispute. When good motives suggest themselves to man, the devil introduces his side of the question; not in open plain apparel, but always in some plausible, pleasant and desirable form. Oh, no! The devil is too smart to tell the truth; he hides his designs beneath something that appeals to man's nature. In opposing good thought and good deeds, the devil is ingenious beyond our comprehension; there are few arguments that he cannot meet plausibly, or at least with seeming plausibility. And when i nnvn ueguis 10 give ear 10 vneso HUg~ gestionis, his progress on lVu> gkxal1 road is amazingly slow. \ But a great deal of good has |don? in tU? world, and the <fccvil ! has a job on his hands to tear this down. Through his human agencies, he works day and night at this task. Effort is made to turn the results of good men's lives into evil channels, to make their work count for naught, and thus make easy the growth of wrong. As a designer the devil is, in truth, a most versatile and original genius. He has a suggestion for every step a man contemplates, advice concerning every course and a promise as to the outcome. When it comes to inventing forms of vice for his followers to revel in. there I is nothing he cannot devise. For the vulgar, lie suggests the most vulgar of all vulgarities; and the meanest, lowest and r)host brutish obscenities. For the yfefined he has all that taste ainj,''culture could desire?refined J crime, cultured meanness and / high class vice. And to tin; iuidifferent, lie deals out an assort mcnt of amusements and occupations, calculated to please all chJss,.s and conditions. Clod's aii*, and the aim of all goodness inl the world is its perfci't i< 1.* , f?i> tievil anus at t'K5 destruction :l damnation ?>f tlio world and I \s croaturea, livery I man is eontiidmij,,^ iwdm?e tdwurd 'lir .i i. | illi.-ii i".agAj^i jJh aim or the other. That is why the devil is in the world?to destroy it. He does not love it at all, neither his servants; he uses and then destroys them. Just how long this spirit of evil is to exist on the earth, rule in the hearts of men and lead them to h??ll, his home, I cannot say. But this much is certain, hot until the state of perfection is reached, not until men's hearts become no longer fit, habitation for such a spirit, will he be compelled to quit this planet. So it is incumbent upon every being of earth to do his part in the world's |>erfection and not retard or hinder the work of1 divine forces. To perfect creation | is the desire of (Jod, "that one, far| off divine event, to which the whole creation moves." homeTndorsement.
