T., Sept. 24, litOi: Mr. Editor: In continuation of fair eulogy t< the women of Dixie, I shall endeavo to make my remarks as brirlly a th) occasion will admit. While it i true a great deal has been said al re idy, yet the press of the countn has made a failure. The plain gos" sip of the country has been mor< man a laiiure. The historian dowi the ages will be a failure. There fore it is truly befitting that all honoi and praise-worthy accounts shouh be accredited them; and who can sa> that her energies ever grew less Iler endeavors never lost its holding and her courage never gave place t< the bitter disappointment of the hour They were ever up and ready tr meet the one and ten thousand diili culties of the day, and in due season she met all of the sore trials that were apportioned her common lot. But these did not retard the progress of her natural faculties. In all of her every day walk, in all of her business pursuits, which were then marking out her future destiny, she never gave vent, she never murmured, all of her few ileeting hours told a lasting story. There was no sounding brass or tinkling symbal kind of business" in the matter, all meant something in the upbuilding of the new born nation. But with that fixed and steady purpose of mind she stood out in bold relief. Though in lit r humble cottage she was not only the idol of the hoys who wore the gray, but she was the ministering angel. {She was first to soothe the bleeding wounds, she was first to dry the fallen tear, she was first to bathe the cheek of the dying boy, she was the first to cheer the aching heart, she was fust to shed that comforting influence that embraced the dying soldiers; and with those halowed attributes she never lost sight of that valorous and patriotic senti ment which she admired so much in the boys in ranks. What an expression by the boys: When I close mine aching eyes, Sweet dreams my senses (ill, And when from sleep I rise Her bright smiles haunt tnc still. We h ave God s everlasting proof that the women of the South "ere the most chivalrous, and truly devote 1 to the cause in which tl ey wire engaged. She has shown to I N CO. The word coward is not in her vocabulary; I. and never in a single day from '61 to '(>5 was she known to shirk a duty. 0 llow well do we remember her in r that all to be dreaded hospita', when v I lay there, my life's blood ebbing | s away. Oh, enchantment! thou art a , . jewel. When that good Samaritan j came with a low, sweet, trembling , voice asked my name and what I > would like to have. I informed her s 1 ot my condition, and with the tender- i . est care and patience of a mother r she dressed my bleeding wound. 1 She gave me all the attention that ( j was in her power. And kind reader, < ? ten thousand times were those good! i r women there to supply the needs of ?* > the suffering soldiers. They dc- t . prived themselves of the comforts in i > order that that they could do some- i . thing for the brave bo3's at the front. 1 i They took their table linen, tore it q : into shreds and carded it into lint to ~i make bandage? for the wounded. The}' utilized everything that gave comfort to the men who faced the ^ bullets. And while the saddened events of the day crowded her men- f t?:l powers, and seemingly her future stamina would dwindle into insig- " nificance. nay verily, the greater the depression the stronger the courage.
