Owensboro, Xy. Ma rks?Marks. Mr. H. W. Marks, of Union, and Miss Janie Laura Marks, of Spartanburg, were happily and quietly married at Cherokee Springs last Sunday afternoon. The bride is a charming young lady and truly the groom ia to be congratulated on winning so fair a bride. Mr. Marks is a special agent of the | Virginia Life Insurance Company and a man of sterling qualities. He has worked up an enormous business here and now has three sub-agents. An inspector on a recent visit here said "Mr. M uksiaihe greatest bustler iu our employ." A Serious Affair. On last Saturday night a telephone message was received from Buffalo saying that a man by the name of Patterson had unmercifully beat his wife and it was later reported that he had killed her. A warrant was sworn out for his arrest and Deputies Walter Sanders and W. II. Couch were sent out in a carriage by Sheriff Sanders to make the arrest. Arriving at the house they were told thry could not come in. They said they had 5 a warrant for Patterson and were going to arrest him. They went in and the 1 row began. The olllcers say the women took part and fought and resisted while Patterson attempted to run. He was i caught by Mr. Couch as he attempted to j leave the house and he submitted quietly, j In the meantime Mr Walter Sanders , had kis hands full in one of the rooms of [ the house, and chairs and furniture were being knocked around promiscuously. Mr. Couch went back with his man and t entered the room to assist Mr. Sanders. a As he did so he saw a man reach over the heads of the women and .point a 3 pistol at Sanders, being in reach he 3 knocked the man's hand up and the i pistol exploded sending the-ball into the wall iust above Mr. Sander's head. It was a very narrow escape. The lights 1 were then put Out. Just as they went I out a small brother of Patterson threw a rock ami struck Mr. Sanders on the head, lioth officers kept per feet ly cool 1 and linally got their man out. Immedib ately after the lights went out several shots were fired but no one was hit. After the officers got their man out and i wliile taking him to tlie carriage several a other pistol shots were ilred in the yard , or nearby. Besides Patterson there were in the house a uaan, a hoy and seven 5 women. George Lee came into the i house dming the melee Saturday night and assisted in making the arrest atfcl got his hand considerably chewed up ? by one of the women. The whole house hold have no doubt gotten themselves 3 in a iierious B?ru|?ew by resisting the olllcers. The l?oy is the one who throw the rock and the man is the one who r tried to shoot Sanders. llis name is Riley Williams, llis name was ascertained from Patterson under the threat that his whole household would be ari rested if he did not tell. Deputy Clarence b Sanders went for and arrested him, although he said he would die before lie ' would go to jail. Court convened Monday morning, Judge It. C. Watts presiding. .Solicitor Segse and Stenographer Motte were in their places, but the witnesses and jurors were not very much in evidence. It seems to have lreen the geneial impression that court would convene the third instead of the second Monday in June mal many witnesses failed to answer. The Judge became somewhat vexed at the failure of witnesses to respond and was not at all pleased with the way the business was hanging tire as a consequence. Only one ease came un. that of JSrnest Ueachum for stealing a cow from Josey Herndoi), both colored.- lie plead guilty and the .Judge immediately sentenced him to pay a line of one dollar and to serve a term of one year in the penitentiary. lie then adjourned court till three o'clock, stating that if the witnesses did not answer they not would not get any pay and if that did not do he would have them arrested aud put in jail. There is one murder case on the docket, David Thomas, colored, for killing a negro on Mr. tiilliam Jeter's place. This case was carried over froni the last Tl /I term.
