If the average distance be but four miles the expense of transportation before delivery to the railroad would be $800,000,000, while the charge for distribution may swell this to over $1,000,000,000 annually, most of which goes to cover wear and tear. "The cost of transportation on our common roads may be greatly diminished by reducing the resistances and Improving the grades, alignment, surface and drainage. If reduced to even one-half the effect would be to double the area of the territory tributary to the railroads and so increase their tonnage as well as the margin available for transportation.
