Mann of > Omaha declares that he wants his con- I gregation to go to sleep dnring church ; services. There is no compulsion about the matter, bat the doctor prefers that everybody fall into a deep sleep and snore also if it makes them more comfortable. "I regard it as a compliment to my integrity and indisputable evidence of confidence in the soundness of my theological views to have prominent members of my congregation go to sleep in their seats and thus rest daring my discourse." Thus says Dr. Maon. who is the progressive and popular pastor of the First Unitarian church cf Omaha. Last Sun- j day he created a sensation in church circles hy delivering a sermon upon the ethics of "Sleeping In Chnrch During the Regular Service." Dr. Mann has the most progressive congregation of Unitarians in the west, and the i startling doctrine us advanced by their pastor has bothered a number of the good old brethren not a little, especially those who sometimes inadvertently practice the habit so much discoursed on by Paul cf Biblical days. Considering tlie words of the doctor's text, many are inclined to doubt the benevolence of his suggestion. Dr. Mann prefaced his sermon by reading for his text from the Acts xx, 0, "And there sat ou the window n certain young man named Entycbns, and as Paul was discoursing at great length he sank down with sleep and fell from the third story and was taken up dead." For the past week tlio town lias talked of little else than tho remarkable biriuuu. Some insist that it was a fino piece of sarcasm leveled at its critics. Dr. Mann, however, declared that ho spoke in entirely good faith. In concluding his staitling sermon. Dr. Mann asserted that he wanted all members of his congregation to feel perfectly at liberty to sleep whenever they felt like it in his church. lie further annonneed for in tho appropriation, that of General John Fulton Reynolds, will be unveiled and dedicated on July 1 of this year. A Philadelphia correspondent desires 1 to hare mushrooms grow among the grass on his lawn and asks how to go about "sowing tbe seed." The mushroom "seed" is the fine black dust that is expelled from a ripening mushroom. It takes profound gaidcning skill to get these to grow, and it is only attempted l:y those who make virgin spawn a business. Spawn is tbo real mushroom plant of which the mushroom itself is the in-' florescence. This is the cohliko materia} that gives the mushroom odor to the earth in which the mushrooms grow. It is not destroyed by desiccation, but will live for years in a condition cf absolute dryness. In this ctato the plant is sold by seedsmen in the form of mushroom ' bricks. tbo plant having been made to grow thoroughly through tbe brick material befero entirely dried. These' bricks are broken in pieces about the Fizb of Walnuts and planted by those who cultivate mnshroaiuq. {troken in pieces and ^htutcd in the lawn, the cor-' fpsfioiidehl could have mushrooms. But 1i little gardening knowledge is 1 necessary. If planted at the wrong time, the spawn would lot away. ' The proper conrse to take is to test tbo earth by n thermometer about mid* summer, and, when the earth is found to be about this temperature.
