Raich ford Scott's Death.
It i? with sincere regret that we chronicle
the cleath of Mr. Katchfoid Scott,
eldest sun or Mr. J. It. T. Scott.
Ratchfurd died in Salisbury, N. C.,
where he held an -important |>osition in
a telegraph oflice at that place. A promising
young iife with a blight future before
it has been suddenly cut off, in the
veiy bloom of youthful manhood. It
will be remembered that Mr. Scott
l amed the art of telegraphy in Union.
He soon secured a situation, and rapidly

ii led. Mr. Scott was sick only a short

electric cash carrier at the big Department
Store of tin Cotton Mill.
The management found the increasing
business demanded a quick communication
with the cashier and after an investigation
of all the cash carriers, adopted
the >.;unon system, which uses electricity
as a motive powdv. The small eas'a box^a
are whirled at lightning speed to the
(tad)iti'a oflije and back again before the
customer knows what ha3 happened. j
The system was put in operation l.ift'
Tuesday night and caused a rushing;
business with the small boys?they stood
and bought until exhausted of cash, j ist
to see the nit run back and forth; itt
winding, from one department t j another,
with its diops and j trnpj from tloor to
ilovir, causes one to wonder how the little
t it knows where to stop, for all travil
the satin road, and though there are
lifly different stations the little fellow
always side-tracks itself, automatically,

nanus of the different streets closing

streets of our town, and the bsst method

other of Main street. Every other town

of the fact that the Democrats of
Texas arranged a big gathering at
Da'las this month, '2nd and 3rd ins'.
d> ring the 'i'exas State Fair and
Dallas Exposition. Of course Democratic
gatherings are not of unusual
occurence iu these days, nor u it
straDge that they should gather together
to discuss matters in general
and presidential possibilities in particular,
but it was said that the recent
Democratic t)arnival was the
biggest thing of the hind that ever
occurred in the Lone Star State.
De that as it may, that in connection
with the State Fair was a great advertisement
for Texas. And the
gathering as a success was more complete
than the Anti-Trust conference
recently held at St. Louis, Mo., which
was called by our governor, J. D.
Sayer.
(There is a senatorial contest now
inythis State between lion. Horace
Chilton, a present incumbent, and J.
W. Bailey, member of Congros9 and
lormer leader of the Democratic
forces ia the lower house of the
National legislature, and who repreresents
us of the 5ib District.
There is a firm in B jnham, Messrs.
D. Stoyer & Company, who, a few
days since consumated a contract
with the English government to buy
1,500 mules to be used in the prospective
war with the Boers in the
transvaal country, South Africa.
They have commenced to buy these
mules and have on hand here now
from two to three hundred*
I had the misfortune just three
weeks ago to receive a wound in iny
left shoulder, which m vy afil ct me
the remainder of my life, but I am
thankful it is no worse. It was
caused hy a fall from a mo\ing train.
