An Appealing Interest for tlio Visitors, Whether IIe Comes Front the North or South, Fast or West. Below can bb found a short sketch of the rooms of Virginia, North Carolina, Koutli Carolina and Georgia in the Confederate Museum at lliehmond, Va. Each room is distinctive, (with its representative recent or supervisor,) but all have about them an appealing interest for the visitor, whether he comes from the North, Houth, East or West; and his sensibilities nre irresistibly enlisted in view ing these mute but eloquent memorials. To the contrary, it may be nrgod Chat the effect must be the opposite, and that sentiments of sympathy, admiration and regard can only bo excited. This, at least, has boen the spontaneous testimony, as constantly expressed, without a single exception, by the multitude from tho North and East who have visited the museum: the Vina inian iioom. Tho "I ares and Penates" of Virginia are scarcoly less dear and sacred to tho other Southern States than to her tho mother of them all She has gathered within the foui vails of one room treasures which, in their silent grandeur of association with l ee, Johnston, Jackson, l'ickett, Muurt and A. Here is tho coat of spotless perfection in which tho broken hearted leader arrayed himself to surrender his ragged little army, upholding in sppeuranee, as in his demeanor of gentle, reserved dignity, the honor of his cause ami of his country, beside it is the tin cup and plate used by him during the war, refusing better service when oll'erod him, saying, "lie would use what was used by his men." As with him, so with his generals tho bent cup and plate of Stonewall Jackson and that of tho gray and dashing Stuart beside his sable plumes tell the same silent story of those who indeed, "endured hardships as good soldiers," ere they "crossed over tho river to rest under the shade of the trees." Letters, canteens, swords, spurs, tattered jackets of gray and battered muskets are thereto tell the story of the splendid service and uneomplainihg sacrifices of those men in gray who bore the "cross without the crown of glory," and now sleep in uumeloss graves, "l'lieir good swords rust, Tlieir bodies dust, Their souls aro with the saints, we trust!" TIIH NORTH CAROTjINA ROOM. North Carolina occupies the room which was the nursery in the home of President I hivis. It Ims ? i view of that part of Kiclunnnd known ' as ? hutch Hill. It was given to North Carolina an 0110 of the choicest apart j incuts in tho Mansion, bemuse of North I ( aroiinn's brilliant record during tho ! war. To corroborate tho number of troops claimed, and substantiated by war records, they have a memorial from the soldiers of Cleveland county, neatly framed. It exhibits this most honorable distinction that out of a voting papulation of l.soi) in IS.id, Cleveland county tpive the Confederate army ".<1011 soldiers. 111 one ease is a small card with a little spri?? of cedar attached to it, with these words; "Cut from the spot where Col. Charles l\ Fisher, of the (Itli North Carolina regiment. was killed, at the lirsl battle of .Manassas; duly "JI, |X<;|." The uufading honor that he won ut that glorious victory of Manassas, July Jl, 1801, was at a fearful cost to friends ami country. Here also is the picture of Henrj Wyatt, the first martyr of .the war, killed at ifetliel Church, June 10, 1801, as well as good pictures of other prominent soldiers and generals. A beautiful flag adorns the wall, which was given by the Kdgeworth girls, of Greensboro, N. C., to the Guilford Grays, commanded by ('apt. John Sloan, of the 27th North Carolina State Troops. Of the gallant Gen, L. O'Jt. branch, they have his pistols and holster and his glove. A large frame is filled with importaut dispatches from i resident Davis to Governor John W. Ellis, of North Carolina; also. one of condolenco to his wife 011 his hearing of the death of Governor Ellis. There is also the flag that was presented to the Governor by Mr. K. Mayo's girls, of Raleigh, the same flag which draped his coffin. THR SOUTH CAROLINA BOOH. Col. Wade Hamilton, of Revolutionary fame, captured from one of Tarletoii's Legion a sword of finest steel in a scabbard beautifully overlaid with tortoise shell. He used it during the war of the Kolution and in the war of 1813. It descended as nu heirloom to his grundson, Gen. Wade Hampton. The sword once more saw service at First Manassas wielded by that gallant cavalry leader. Sheathed now and crossed with a long sabro, also historic from lmvillnun/1 l*i? n ..vv. Harlee, Col. Perrinand others. Standing guard over the ;,2> records ami relics hangs a full length oil portrait of (Jen Hampton in uniform, taken during the Confederacy. Around him are (.ens. Mc'Jowau, .Butler, Connor, Stephen Elliott, 8. 1). Lee, Bratton, Wallace, llagood, Col. Hagood, (the youngest colonel in the Confederate army,) ('apt. I.angdon Clieves; the South Carolina war Governor, Pickens; the Hon. \V. Porciier Miles, and other heroes of the old Palmetto State. All these portraits were collected through the personal eflbrts of .Mrs. II. W. Kichardson, of Columbia, S, C. A tablet case contains valuable papers, letters, war music, memorials, etc. Among the battle-scarred flags in another case rests that of the Blh South t arolitia lleginient, which was borne through twenty nine bat iles. Although in tatters the embroidery upon it, wrought by woman's hand, is well preserved. May this later work of woman, the preservation of Confederate relics and records in the Confedeiato Museum, endure for countless generations to come. THE GEORGIA ROOM. The room assigned to (Jcorgia was the drawing room of tlio White rlouse of the Confederacy, and is one of the montHfCanvit'tll in the Mansion. luwMgn j^ini was held the Tfccrrrrirrgivt^^W William (Jritlin Waller and his JHrlc, who was the sister of President Davis, 'the sword presented to i apt. W aller upon this occasion by President Davis is now in this room, loaned by his daughter, Miss Elizabeth Tyler Waller. Dr. Everard Do Bonne bequeathed to the Georgia room the very valuable and extensive collection ot books, papers. pictures, and nil manner of relics accumulated by his mother, Mrs. Mary Do Hen no, a native of Savannah, ami a most devoted Confederate, The books alone in this remarkable collection number over TOO, some of them of great rarity and historic interest. '1 hey demonstrate, many of them, by the dingy line of the paper and the indistinctiveness of the print, and further by the binding, (in some instances wail paper) the dire straits of the South in ihe want of material and appliances. Olio interesting feature of .this collection is the largo number of autograph letters, some from I resident I avis, his Cabinet, the < onfederate < Senerals aud many prominent .lien of that time Three large cases 'have already been tilled from this collection, and there are yet many articles unpacked. A fourth case, much larger than the others, eontniss the reiics which have been sent from (leorgia. Separate casos will be assigned to each city as soon as the number of relics makes it necessary. A few must be mentioned to show the unwavering love, the patient toil, and the faithfulness even unto death of those who lived in those sorrowful days. From Savannah comes the miniature of ('apt. Fdward llichardson Choves, of the staff of (Jeu. A. K. 1. aw ton, who was killed in the battle of Seven l'ines at the age of 1J years, tie was the only son of his mother, and she was a widnw. From Augusta a loving sister lias sent in memory of her brother, Edward H. I fall, a large number of war photographs and relics of different kinds. This brother, who was killed at. Murfreesboro.er u.. was color bearer of Company 1), IstOSeorpia Volunteers. A pair of trousers worn by Serpt. .lolin W. tester, woven from cow's hair by his mother, and the shuttlo with which they were woven, comes from Americas. Amonpst the portraits by the side of her brothers, liens. Howell and T. 15. IJ. ('obb, hangs one of Mrs. Mary Cobb Johnson, of Atlanta.
