The country editor may occasionally blunder in his English, yet he usually contrives to make his meaning clear, and when he has accomplished this he has done about all that can reasonably be expected. But in the higher walks of journalism, and in the realm of high class fiction where gifted beings stalks about with their lieads above the clouds, one naturally looks for work Veyond the criticism of a school-boy. It is putting it mildly to say that this reasonable ?xpectation is seldom met. The most accomplished writers and sharpest critics are guilty of errors that can only Ix; accounted for on the grounds of gross carelessness. A common offense is the use of the abbreviation "don't"' with the third person singular. Editor Dana of the New York Sun, is said to pride himself on a correct use of language, yet the other day he asked in cold type: "Why don't the New York World pop fortyseven questions or so at Tom Heed?" The "Dean of American Journalism" is oy no means uio oniy oiienuer in uns respect. One of the most scholarly miters on the New York Tribune recently said of a contemporary: "lie dont know what he wants." Our note ln>ok 13 full of blunders culled from the wotks of famous writers, but limited space admits of but one more melancholy example :?In one of hisdelightful novels Mr. Ilowells speaks of "three people sitting in a room." Now if two of these "people" bad withdrawn, what would have become of "the people that was left? * Notice.
