Kducatioiial facilities were rather limited in those days, and tlie Colonel only acquired a common old Held school Knglish education. He was a man of iiiicomnionnuly good common, hard sense, and a good judge of liunian nature. He was at one time probably the most popular man in Union county. He was always proud to proclaim that lie came from between the plough handles to public iHisilion and public notice. It - was our pleasure to know the Colonel well for a number of years. He was a character of many line parts. lie was always guidi d hy patriotic motives. We have often heard him say "that he loved dear old South Carolina nearly as much - s he did his mother." lie was a man lull of feeling. and a'.so unite humorous at times. He was full of originaiity. He had a great many of the essential pails of a great man. He was elected clerk of the court of 1'nion county when lie was twenty-live yours old. lie held that olliee for sixteen tears. lie was admitted to the bar in |s.V>. He practiced with Judge Wallace until |s77. then with ( oloiiel liioii. then with S. I>. Thomson and was a part tier ol J'lKi-^e Cothranat the time ?;}' hisdeath.
