"My dear Mrs; Monro: The Southern States are now much interested in the Confederate Museum formerly opened in Richmond February 'J-ud 1890. Will you not help fill up our South Carolina Room at present rather bare. We hope to accomplish a great deal before the meeting of the Confederate Veterans at Richmond some time in Jane. The need of an organization to preserve a true and faithful record ol the gallant struggle made by the sjldiers of the South for independence being keenly felt,, tho Confederate Memorial Literary Society was chartered and organized under the laws of Yirgiuia, its object being to teach all future generations the 'rue history of the war and the principles : for w hieh these soldiers laid down their lives. Tho society has received from the ! city of Richmond, the mansion w hich ( was occupied by the Hon. Jefferson , l>avis as his residenco while he was J i resident of the Confederacy?one ol the handsomest houses in Richmond, and standing in spacious grounds. With indefatigable energy the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, assisted by the Hebrew, Oakwuod, and Hollywood Memorial Associationand the States named below, raised | tho funds neeess:irv to make the house < ;t fire-proof museum, where tlio con federate relics, Southern auniorials. and tiie archives of the Southern [ 'historical societp arc collected and j carefu 1 !v preserved. A room, bearing the distinctive I name, shield and colors of the State ' it represents, is assigned to each State j of the Confederacy, and ir a repository i for memorials from that St?te.
