Bauer, iu ituning his final report for tho season of 1895, says: The week ending, Monday, October 7th, was cooler than usual ovor j the entire State, the departure from the uornml having been greatest on the first three days when it ranged from 8 to 12 degrees per duy below, after which there was a gradual rise to normal or above on Sunday and ? Monday (Gth and 7th). The tempera- 1 ture for the week ranged between 92 ' at Columbia on the 7th and 30 at 1 Greenville on the 1st. The mean tem- 1 peraturoof tho week, deduced from33 ( station reports, was 03.5 and the nor- f mal for tho same period is upproxi- 1 inutcly 08,5. 1 There were frosts on the 1st, 2nd ' and drd, reaching from the extreme * western portions of the State into the 1 central and northeastern counties where, however, hut little or no injury * resulted. In the western and extreme ' northern counties the frost was heavy. < killing | i i vines, sweet potato vines, ! wrv lot* e >"!?. and what cotton leave.-. th; ' remained green, but it was not 1 co! i in ugh to injure cotton bolls ' ' 'n re was an entire absence of ruin 1 lining 5iie we !i and the drought be- 1 cuuie greatly iutensilied. Over the ( whole Stat, there Inis not been more than a* best a tra e of rain siuee from ( the'dth to the llith of September, and j jii many places there has beou no bone- J lieiul rain since the iJ'hl of August. I The effect of the drought has been to { cut short the pea crop; stopthegrowth ! of cotton ami cut off the top crop; pre- ' vent late corn from tilling properly;to ' cut off the yield of tweet potatoes, es- ' timated at from one-fourth to otic 1 third; to greatly reduce, if not to ? make an entire failure , of all root f crops in general; to reduce the yield 1 of molasses from sorghum and sugarcane; to ruin fall gardens, to keep ' back the growth of winter vegetables ' on the coast truck farms; and to pre- l * vent the sowing of small grains, llow- ' ever, the long continued dry. sunny weather gave oxcellcutopportunity for 1 making hay of all varieties and a very 1 large fodder crop was saved in the 1 very best condition; for drying out and housing corn; for piekiug cotton. ; which made rapid progress, and the " lint has been saved in a beautiful eon- | * ditiou; ami for general harvest work. -| There was almost continuous clear weather the whole week, on the 7th j alone was the sky obscured bv clouds j Ill mi* wr^iria jHMiion. The condition of the various crops . remains practically unchanged at the cud of tin* week. Rapid pr ogress was in ule in picking . anil harvesting out ton, so that it is generally reported from the eastern portions of ilie State that at least twot1oI'tls of the *rop has Ween picked anil ^ a large proj ortion of it marketed. What remains in the fields, in that section, is all open, and picking will ! We finished in from two to three weeks, if the weather remains favorable. In the western portion of the State picking is less advanced, Wut even there nearly the whole crop is open, and picking and marketing is Wcing pushed. 'L'he prevailing >i tisfai'tory price of eottoii causing the fanners to .-ell as fast as gathered. As picking advauues towards completion the smalltiess of the crop becomes more and more uj>pa rent. There is little more to add to what has Ween said of corn in previous bulletins. Husking and housing has been carried on to some extent, but the weather has Ween such that corn del not demand immediate attention, was. in fact. Wfttor conditioned in t ! hunk tbuil it Would llltvt! herll 111 tilt' erih. 'I ho crop is largo <'iioiigii to supply tho iiooils Of tho Stuto, with ii possibly a surplus. 1 ho oiitiiv season has favored tho harvesting of nee, and that work is practically oiuiiplotoil ?>n tho coast : ami rivor plantations; upland rioo r fail oil rapidlv .luring Soptoiulior, and i is ripening vorg unsatisfactorily. Ii l'oas of lato planting did not fill well, and will ho a short crop. I airly pons f yielded well. Sweet potatoes aud soeoud crop of u Irish jiotatoes arc yielding very poorly = generally, although quite well in places. jj The growing season is now practically ended and little change can ( occur in the condition of tho different crops not yet entirely gathered. ?
