AN INGENIOUS DETAIL OF MODERN NAVIGATION. Flags by Day und Ra.lo ot Fire, Lamps and Kleetrio Lljlits ?t Night? The Secret Code. ? J HE methods of signaling from I , one war vessel to another 3 while cruising or iu notion is ip ono of the most interesting and ingenious details of modern navigation. Brains and inveutive gouius have been freely expended in devising new system* .and improving old ones, until a ro ? .lags and peunants, or a swaying t u, or Viall of lire can nnI nibilate miles of rough billows as easily as the telegraph spuus a continent. The systems chiefly used by the Nuvy Department arc flags by day and lights at night. The flag system is very simple. Ten I flags stand for the numerals from ono to ten. By grouping these flag*, any combination of numbers may be obtained, which shall bo equivalent to a word, phrase or whole senteuce, according to a code issued by the Navy Department. For example?265') mav mean "Running short of coal ;** 3RD, "Taok to windward 7(>0, "Boiler disabled 45, "Wheel into line for maneuvering," and so on ad infinitum. The code books, one of which is found on every vessel, aro thoroughly indexed, with each combination of figures opposite the word, phrase or sentence it stands for in signaling. I The combinations are secret and are carefully guarded to prevout an enemy, or even a curious Jack Tar from reading the dispatches from sel to vessel. The sets of nuir so * many, and may be a altered so easily that the chance of their secret lee' constant repetitions, ud the code book falling i of an enemy in time or are heavily weighed w if thrown overboard i?* lUDb. The designs of thr tho numerals are as flag; 2. white flag; flag made of two ti iug shades, the c right hand oorner olor in the same bine right-hand . shade of the otner tr?, material if contrasting flag with red bars at top 8, white bars at top and blue bars at top and both a flag bearing u bine cros In addition to the iia' numerals a number " used to qualify tb' pressed fixed pbre signals the sonde has been received Another is called t and its use is ingor. that all the sen ten book are iu the aibr the Rear-Admiral on ship Columbia wants mandunt of the Miunt coal enough the neart can find to the questioL ask will be: "We have expressed by *'073/ f< This will be answering; 1 he q fore it is asked, so the " tory" pennant is flown at nninernl flags ami the signal is into a query. The commandant of the Minnenpo- j lis hoists a pennant signaling that the message is received and prepares to answer it. Timling he has 1100 tons of coal in the scuppers, his answer will Vie: "Have J100 tons of coal on board." He consults the index of his | code book and finds the sentence: "Have ? tons of eonl on board." ; He sends this message first by signaling the combination of numbers op- j posite the sentence in the code book, ami then signals 2100, the number of j tons. To do this the first method to suggest itself would be raising four tings, two red, each signifying 1, and two with blue crosses, each standing for 0, and thus spell out 1100. The code calls for auother method, however, at once simple and ingenious, and much more saving of bunting bach vessel :s provided with a set of pennants called repeaters?first, second and | third respectively. When a repeater i is raised below flags representing t number** it. shows that one of the uu- 1 inerals above it in repeated in the position it occupies. The tirst repeater jueauH the repetition of the tir?t number of the combination, the second repeater the secoud number, eud ho j on. Eleven hundred won hi ne spelled out in this way: First, a red tlag for 1, then the lirst repeater, showing the tho first number was repeated ; then a flag with a blue cross for 0, and finally the third repeater, showing that the third number in the combination was repeated. The English Navy utilizes the rays from a powerful electric light with excellent results. The lamp is concealed behind adjustable shutters, which open and close rapidly at the will of J the operator. These shutters are j shifted, partially opened or closed, and combined iu such a manner as to { throv out shafts of light of different dimensions, "hapes, inteusitv and duration. In tnis way a system of telegraphic signals is established. Considerable attention has recently been dirooted toward perfecting a system of signals by a number of eleotrio lamps fastened to the mast of a war vessel, and the Navy Department recently appointed a board which now has the subject under consideration. Many visitors to the World's Fair will remember an exhibition of this system during the gorgeous illuminations and tiroworks displays upon the lake beneath in front of the manufactures building. A row of lamps was fastened between two cords on the mast of the battleship Illinois, and wheu the display was at its height these lamps would flash out combinations of red and white light, changing order, forming and reforming, alternating and transposing positions in the twinkling of an eye. This mysterious flashing was accomplished with a koy board connecting with the wires supplying electricity to the lamps. The signal officer manipulated this very much after tho fashion of a simplified typewriter, an instant's pressure causing the lamp to burn brightly and fade away into darkness. The idea of this system is to form combinations of lamps which will serve the sauio purpose at night as the particolored pennants do in the daytime. Tue system is far fro in complete, however, aud is open to several objections. It is not unreasonable to believe, however, that the time is not fur distant when brains and machinery vill overcome ocean distances and the **vil of 'glit s in the past century the' t lesse'1 * ii tia SvfaF'tfHSS Both the method and results ^hen Syrup of Figs is taken; it is pleasant and refreshing to the ta?ie, and acts fenily yet promptly on the Kidneys, /ivcr ar.d Uovrels, clonuses the system effectually, dispels colds, headaches ajul fevers and cures habitual constipation.
