The Aiethodists have made arrangements 0 ha?e some material improvements made in their church. A tower ssveoty feet ligh will be built on tlio comer to the left as rou go in. Entertainment The Knigh's of Pythias Eutertaiument last Friday nighi wn* a marked success, in fact t was .1 good t/iiuy. Anderson Brown lost h 19 house, a uie story building in the southern part el' town, by fire last Sunday night. The fireBell sounded jnst as the j.eople were getting out of church, about half past nine o'clock. Being on the highest hill anywhere about here the direction of the fire was quickly located By everyone. People at once commenced to tlock to the scene. A fire wil' always draw a crowd. Several hundred people got there in a shod while. It was loo late to do any good however. The fire was uudouBted'y well under way before it was discovered, for those who went from the hotel at the double quick on the first alarm got there .just in lime to sec the roof fall in. It burned very rapidly and was toon consumed. The origin of the fire is not known. Mr. Brown left home about half past eight and as usual left his lamp burning. Mrs. Brown was away from home having gone to Chester to visit her sister, ;0 ue time since. I FOURTH OF JULY Next Thursday ul 5:30 p. in. the Johnson J ' Rifles will have their annual celebration o' j the 4th of July, at l'errin's Grove. ! At 5:30 there will be a contest platoon drill ? for a gold medal between the first platoon under Lieut. Butler and the secood under Lieut. McGowan. The medal is the property of the Company 1 and was given some five years ago by Mr. L. 1' ( Murphy. The lieutenant whose platoou ex. < eels in the contest, receives the medal and 1 wears it until the next year and until it is taken from him by some other person. After the drill there will be target shooting for a prize?a silver cup, given several s years ago by Col. Rice. This prize is also held for a year and until it is taken by a ( better marksman. Augbtry was tried | at the last term of court and convicted, but ! on account of the nature of the evidence and ' the peculiar verdict rendered by the jury, 1 anew trial was granted to Aughtry. This is Judge Townscnd's first ap. pearence on the hooch at Columbia. From the State we copy the following: The regular Jnue term of Court of General Sessions opened in Columbia yesterday. 1 Judge D. He showed yes- 1 terday that he intends to run his court on ! business principles, not permitting useless 1 delays for s'ighi excuses, and brooking no 1 tardiness in the attendance of witnesses and J jurors. Judge Townsend makes a fine upnearatjee oa the bench. He sentenced the ' prisoners yesterday as fast as their cases ' were disposed of, and in almost every instance imposed the chaingang sentence. In his brief charge to the grand jury as to its duties lie laid particular stress on the ( matter of their duties io regard to ascertaining the exact condition ot affairs in each county ofiicc. He said it was the bounden duty of each individual grand juror to look iuto these matters, and it was not safe always to leave the investigation in the hands of a committee- He said also that it was their duty to see Hint any law of the State, < which was to e knowledge of any juryman ( beiog violated, was enforced. He made the ( announcement also that no iurvmnn r.r witness who was not on haul promtply at , the hour fixed for the assembling of the | court would be allowed any pay for the day. The thunder cloud looks beautiful in the distance, as the z'g-zag lightning flashes hither and thither in its bead, and now and then sending a bolt to earth. May, formerly of Union, who lives on Dr. Long's land in Cross Koys township, was struck by lightning as was also u hired hand who lives with him. Tom Lamb. They had gone under a tree to get out of the rain, when the lightning struck the tree. Doth men were knocked senseless, and Lamb s clothes were torn from his body. They were carried home in a wagon. A society has been organized here by the name of The Union Musical Association, the object of which is to promote the musical interest of the city. They hold their raeetiugs and d? their practicing at the Graded School liuilding. They have about fifteen members now and will take in others from time to time. A concorl will be given once a month.
