On quiet South Street last Monday evenning about five o'clock was enacted a high tragedy, in which two women and a man were wounded, I lie last fatally V. L. Crumpton. in a fit of jealousy shot his wife, his sister in-law and himself. It is always hard aii'l sometimes next to impossible to get nil of I lie facts in su-li cases but we shall try to give at least an outline of what took place. Cruttipton is a native of Danville Va ami came to Union ab nt a year ngo, bringing with bun li s wife, theua bride. He kept a saloon at lirsr, and until the town couuui! passed its ironclad ordinance against the sale of lienor, when he in coui paoy with Air. J no. Hay opcucd a grocery store. For some time he an I his wife seem to have gotten along together very well: at least, if any difference arose it was not ofsullicent violence to get to the public car. Recently , however rumors of gross linpropricti es iu bis wife, which have been current on the street for some time, reached the cars of Crumptou. last Saturday night Crumptou lay in jail ou a charge of drunk and disorderly, on complaint said to have been made by his wife. Undoubtedly there was bad feeling between them \vi"h wh en the rumours had a good deal to do. Crumptou s int cation was to <iuit his wife an 1 leave here on Mo uday for Texas, but lie was not able to raise the niotiey. Thenit was that he determined ou his dreadful deed, lie told several pcrsous of his intentions, who, while not realizing that he was terribly iu eajuest, yet eudeavoured to dissuade him. He went home about live oolook iu tii c evening. His wife was in her room wit li lier sister who was se'c and had been .dck for several days, tYumpwm went to (lie dining room, an I ate his dinner. lie showed no sign of anger and his wife * it at table with hint and waited on h im through the meal. After dinner they ho tit went back to the room where the sick woman was. After "nyitg there a few minutes t'rumpton asked Mrs Oruiitfton to go up the railaoad with hi n.
