Swinburne's poems show clearly tho mental bias of their author, who is described as being peculiar and eccentric. Many of tho men of genius who havo assisted in makiug the history of tho world hayo been the victims of epilepsy] Julius Ctesar, military leader, statesman, poli, tician and author, was an epiloptic. I Twice, on the field of battle, bo was \ striken down by this disorder. On one occasion, while seated rt tbo tribune, be was unable to riso when the senators, consuls and prrc'.ors paid him a visit of ceremony and honor. They were of. fended at his seeming lack of respect, and retired showing signs of anger. Ojesar returned home, stripped off his clothes and offered bis throat to be cut by any one. Alcoholism and morphinism, or au uucontrollablo desire for a'oohol or opium in somo form or other, are now recognized as evidences of degeneration. Affen of genius, both in tbo old world and in the ucw, have shown this form of degoueratiou. Among; the men and women of genius of the old world who abused the uso of alcohol ?ud opium were Coleridge, James Thomson, Carcw, Sheridan, JStccle, Addison, 11 oilman, Charles Lamb; Madame do Stnc), Burns, Savage, Alfred do Musset, Klelst, Carucei, Jan Stecn, Morlaud Turner (^?he painter), Gerard do Nerval, Hartley Coleridge, Dussek, 11 mdcl, Cluck, Praga, llovaui aud the poet Somerville. This list is by no \ means complete, as the well-informed I reader may see at a glance, yet it serves to show, howover, how very often this form of degeneration makes its appearance in men of genius. In men of genius the moral sense is sometimes obtunded, if not altogether absent. Sallust, Sencoa and Bacon wero suss pected felons, llousscau, Byron, Fosoolo and Carcsa wero grossly immoral, while Casanova, the gifted mathematician, was a common swindlor. Murat, llousscau, Wagner, Clement, Pidorot and Praga wore sexual perverts. Genius, like insanity, lives iu a world of its own, hcooc wo liud few, if any, evidences of hum in ali e'ion in men of genius. Jury "Sits ?5ie inured. The Union County (N. J.) Grand Jury yesterday brought in a presentment against churches and societies that run lotteries at their t'.iirs and festivals. The Grand Jury also banded in sixtyeight indictments. The reading of the presentment caused a surprise in the courtroom. It w.19 as follows: "We lind upou iuvostigation that tho particular caso coucorniug a lottery alluded to by Ilis Honor, Justico Van Syokol, in bis ohargo to us upon the opening day of this term, was not within pur jurisdiction. " Viler n careful consideration of tbc entire Pubject, we havo concluded to bring into court this presentment of facts : "The Const itutiou of our State absolutely prohibits lotteries, and ,.ui courts have held that the distribution of presents or prizes at | ublio exhibit otii, or entertainments, by chnnco, is a lottery. The Revised Statues of our Stato declare that "all lotteries for money, goods, wares, &c., &c., shall be, and are hereby adjudged to bo common and publio nuisancos," and tho statutes further provide that if any person shall either sell or offer to sell any ticket or cbaugo in any lottery he shall be deomed guilty of a misdemeanor, for which he tuay bo imprisoned in the State prison for a term of ono year. Our courts have also held that any place in which illegal practices are carried on (such ns holding a lottery) becomes a publie nuisance, and may be indicted as a disorderly house, and those who in any wise contribute by their services or presence in conducting such an cstabment may themselves be iudictcd for keeping a disorderly ho sc. "Wo believo that churches, clubs and societies formed for the purposo of improving the inotal tone of their members or putrous are the most llagrant offenders agaiust lottery laws in our county. Within tlio past few days it has been publicly aunouueed in ono of the Elizabeth papers that at a church fair to be held in tho near luturo, $500 worth of stock is to be rallied off.
