Sumter County has thrown its hat ,into the ring, figuratively -speaking, ? and is now working up its muscle for I the big "punch, known as themember j ship campaign drive of the-South Car tolina Development Board of next jweek. A group of representative citi -zens of the county met yesterday afternoon in the .Chamber of Com merce - rooms and under the able leadership of the county chairman -Frank Williams, laid out such plans as will assure the success of the De velopment Board so far as Sumter is concerned. Sumter can always be counted upon when it comes to un dertaking her share in any project that stands for "DO IT FOR SOUTH CAROLINA". And more than ever it is true of Sumter under the pe culiar conditions which have made necessary, such a State organization as the Development Board. I Realizing that there are but one or two more crops at the most before the boll weevil will make serious in roads into the prosperity of the com munity, Sumter citizens gladly wel come-this united effort of developing a nation-wide market for our products - other than-and including cotton. It is appreciated by all that if such an or ganization can do for our products [what the Sunkist Products Sales Agency has done for the products of California, not one single Sumter citi zen ? would 'want to be left out. j . At .present we can grow sweet po I fatbes till-they fairly obscure the sun jfor number. But what is the use? when we can find no'market for them to make the growing of them pay? But?if the Development Board can do what it says it will, and estab lish a national market for us and also . organize a sales agency to handle this and other similar products then sure ly will we rise up and call her bless ed. For such action 'will assuredly guarantee Sumter's prosperity. And yet this'matter of marketing crops on a nation-wide basis as is thme Sunkist Products, is but one of 18 equally important items which the'.Board will undertake for the stabilization of'the wealth, health "and continued prosperity of our State.
