ARMY DESEJITER CAUGHT IN SUMTER A deserter from the U. S. Array was captured in Sumter on Decem ber 6lh by Officer Rlanding R. Du Rant. The deserter was named Charles Deas and was a private. Be <leseried on Xov. Oth, and captured one month later; A: the- time of the desertion his organisation was sta tioned at Camp Jackson, near Co lumbia. In police court, the ease of Willie Frierson, colored, was tried for larceny of goods from a local store and also for iho taking of an automobile and joy riding in same without the per mission of the owner. The young ne gro entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of larceny and a plea of guilty tot he taking of the auto. The 'recorder imposed a line of $50 or 30 days for the larceny and $25 or 30 days for the taking of the auto. W. Y. L. Marshall and A. S. Harby, both crashed into trees in an effort to avoid a collision. Mr. Marshall, who was in a Ford, was considerably shaken up and cut across the face by the breaking of the windshield. The car was also damaged to a great ex tent. Mr. Darby was driving a Velie which was also considerably damaged, one wheel being completely ruined. The driver of the ear was not hurt so badly as was Mr. Marshall. 1$ seems as if the accident was unavoidable. The wet and slippery streets-seem to have played an important part.
