Simmons and 16 members of the crew of the Ameri? can steamer Charlemaguo Tower, Jr., which went down off tl e north coast yesterday morning, the whaleback steamer Bayport reported hero late this afternoon. Wreck survivors were lunded at Jewell's Point, where they boarded a trolley for Norfolk, leav? ing Norfolk tonight for New York. With four men half dead from ex? posure, the shipwrecked crew were picked up near Harncgat Light yes? terday afternoon at & o'clock during a blinding snowstorm, five miles south of where the Charlemagne Tower, Jr, foundered. Their rescue was ef? fected by the barest chance, a signal light attracting the uttention of Capt. Herunter of the Hayport just as the steamer was in the act of passing the small tu.at. Snow was falling heav? ily and it waa fast growing dark. Capt. Beranger, though on the bridge, barely could see the light aej It tlared up. The Hnyport put about and discovered the hulf frozen and snow covered men huddled in u 20 foot boat. A stiff wind prevailed at the time and the men were water soaked and numh from the cold. In order to make room for the over wded cargo, some of the men were forced to lie in the bottom of the boat and these were in worse condi? tion than the others, four of them be? ing restored with difficulty after be? ing taken aboard the Hayport. Ilerkman. jeweler and w .itrhnuiki i, at 418 Main street, and stole four trays of jewelry. One of the cases contained about 12 gold watches. According to Patrolman Broom, the robbers must have started at work shortly after he passed by the store while traversing his beat. It is thought that the robbers had a key to the door, as no marks were visible that showed the use of tools. The alleged "spotter" is held at the police station pending investigation, and is said to have pretended the condition of a "helpless drunk" when arrested. Which sank near here, were brought ashore yes? terday. The revenue cutter Itnsca reached the scene after the steamer went down. The commander of the cut- i ter was signaled from shore of the predicament of the IS men, among whom was the captain, and the Itasca | put to sea to search. There are two big sand bars near where the steamer sank yesterday and the life savers were seriously hand? icapped in launching their boats. One was finally launched hut was upset and the life savers waded ashore. The captain of the Tower and the 17 men took a long boat, it was so overcrowded that they were afraid to try landing on the first bar and hung around outside hoping the tur? bulent sea would subside. Snow was falling; it grew thicker about 3 a. m. today and the long boat was lost from view. The weather lightened up again about 3.30 and there was then no sign of the long boat. Thompson, after he came ashore with a fragment of the crew, talked about the ship. He said the repairs to the machinery at Hampton Itoads i on Wednesday were hasty and not well done. The engines went bad again soon after putting to sea and this condition, combined with heavy seas due to the storm, resulted in the i wreck. The ship sprang le.^k.. In bom and stern, he said, and in the end all the plates were shaken loose. Water poured into the doomed vessel as j through a sieve. The steam pumps) kept her going for a while, then with' the aid of hand pumps the crew tried j desperately to light back the inrush- j ing water but their struggle was un? availing and it finally reached the en-1 gines.
