Jan. 2.?President Wilson and John Llnd. his personal representative In Mexico, toniKht sat In the cabin of the scout cruiser Ches t* r. deeply absorbed In a discussion cf the Mexican situation. It was their first meeting since last July when the president conferred with Mr. Lind st White House pre? paratory to the tatter's departure for Mexico City wit^ Instruction* ihat created a diplomatic episode in Amer? ican history. For two days a mysterious reticence has been apparent at the presidential cottage, concerning the present con? ference. When dispatches from Vera Crus announced that Mr. Lind would come to Pass Christian there was a noticeable manifestation of displeas? ure among the members of the pres? ident's party that his destination should have been Made public. Presidont Wilson bad hoped to slip liiletly away aboard the revenue cut? ter Wlnona "for a yachting trip" and rneet Mr. Llnd at sea. They had hcen in conference about an hour when the red and blue lights to the forerlgging of the Chester begun to flash u mysterious naval Morse to the revenue eutter. As the Winona has no wireless, the cruiser is presumed to have notified Wash? ington to telegraph by overland line a change in plans. The president had decided to come in at Gulfport to save time, and a special trolley car was arranged to tuke him over the mile Journey to his automobile. The conference lasted another hour, and the president was then trans? ferred to the Winona which brought him back at top speed to Gulfport. President Wilson arrived at the Gulfport dock aboirt midnight and motored to his cottago here. The president sent word that he would have nothing to say tonight, but agreed to meet the correspondents early tomorrow. It was learned that the Chester would start for Vera Cruz tomorrow afternoon as soon as Norman Lind and John Lind, Jr., could go aboard f>?r a short visit with their father. CELEBRATE CHINA WEDDING. Pass ChriHtian, Miss., Jan. 3.?With1 the departure late today of the scout cruiser Chester, bearing John Lind,1 the president's envoy, back to Mexico, tO continue his observation of Mexi-; can affairs, the mystery that has en-1 veloped Mr. Lind's visit to President Wilson was only partially cleared. Some light was shed on the result of the conference in an interview wbi?h the president granted early today. He announced today that his conference with Mr. Lind had developed no change in the policy of the Washing? ton administration toward Mexico and that no new plan or move in the sit? uation bad been decided upon. The president referred to the con? ference as a "get together talk" for mutual information. He explained that although Mr. Lind constantly had been ..ending full dispatches, a con? versation of a few hours had been deemed worth more than weeks of j telegraphic communication with the Added value of affording an exchange Of viewpoints regarding the situation. President Wilson added that there had heen no special occasion for Mr. Lind's visit?no advices, excitement o?" new questions. The president said that his conver? sation with Mr. Lind had covered the i whole held of condition in Mexico but that no particular measure or I lan had been dwelt upon. When asked if he was more hope? ful for a speedy settlement of the trouble, Mr. Wilson made it clear that hi personal view of the situation bad in 1 changed. The president has held thai the Hucrta government is being slowly crushed, not only by the cou ; stltutional forces, but through finun i cial isolation and that it Inevitably ; must fall. He smiled when told of re? ports that provisional President Huerta or some high officials of the : Huerta government were on board the Chester, and laughingly said: "Well, I didn't fee them if they were there." The president said that while Mr. land was not exactly enjoying his long stay in Mexico, he was perfectly willing to stay there and was deeply interested in the situation. Mr. Wil? son apparently attached little im? portance to the Lind episode, pointing out that the proximity of his personal envoy, coincident with his own vaca? tion on the Mississippi coast bad been as much as anything else a motive for the conference. The president laid I emphasis on the fact that nothing ? specific, such as the removal of u>*' embargo on arms or similar moves, had been discussed. Though this talk somewhat cleared up the atmosphere, the mystery of the president's unusual course in receiv? ing his envoy remained unsolved. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.
