Hones Bertouslv Damaged by Rre Early Friday Morning and Negro Loans Mighty hollars in Cash and Practically All of Household Fur? niture?Cause of Fire Unknown. s ,m Green, a colored hackman well known in the city, had s narrow escape from being burned to death ? ally Friday morning when his house ??n Council Street caught lire and was practically destroyed with all of the furniture and household appurten? ances. Green and his two small sor.s were iti un tip stairs room asleep when the plastering from overhead was falling on the foot of the bed and on the floor of the room. The room w? full of ?moke and overpowerlngly not. lie seised 'tie of the children .and ran to th. door, hut when he had opened it the flames ?and smoke hurst in so that he was knocked down and near? ly senseless. He struggled back to the other side of the room and at last found his two children huddled up in one corner. He then dragged them to a window, which he suceoed ? 1 in raising, after several futile ef? forts, and pushed them out on the sind. He then ran hack to get his clothes, remembering his money which he had left in his vest pocket, and seizing his coat off the chair he clambered out of the window. From the shed he climbed down the col? umn to the piaaaa and assisted his two children to do likewise. Green stated Friday morning that it was the most terrible experience lie had ever passed through. He said that he had been out lMe, up to one o'clock, when he returned honte. In his veal pocket was eighty-one dol? lars in currency and slightly more than a dollar in silver. He had taken -?ff his clothes down stairs and when he started up to his room he had tak? en his coal off the chair, thinking the vest was with It. After the (ire he had searched for the vest, but had not been able to find it, either down? stairs or elsewhere in the part of the house which was left. He stated, as his reason for having this large a sum in his pocket, that he had a bill to pay Friday and had decided not to put the money in the bank, but to keep it until then. j Green stated that he did not know the origin of the fire. It had pro? bably started in his dining room downstairs. He had a fire in there ! when he came home Friday morning and it was his custom to leave a light burning in that room, but he ? lid not remember whether or not the light was burning when he went to bed. Practically all of the second story of the building was burned and all of the lower floor was badly damaged. All of the household furniture ex? cept a china closet and the furniture In one room was destroyed, inc lud? ing a piano.
