Bugen? Porter, colored, was arrest - ?d Wednesday night by Officers Ward an<i Owena when he was caught In the act of breaking Into the cash drawer of the Sumter Clothlug com pany'i elore. An alarm had been at? tached i?) the drawer so that when it was open* (l the alarm would g<> off. Thli warned the police, who were on the watchout, of the attempted theft and they at once entered the store, and after KtOtt trouble Which attracted the attention of hundreds of peraoni on the itreet, caught the ne? gro as hfl was trying to make, his es cape through a hole in the wall through which he had entered. It seems that the Sumter Clothing Company has been troubled by thefts from their cash drawer for several j months and a few weeks ago a bui> glar alarm device was rigged up to the money drawer and wires stretch id to a window of the Bumter Dry Goods bulldlngi whose a bell was 1 need to glVS the alarm in ease a robbery was attempted. Borne time after the bell was placid there the drawer was opened, but the bell did not mal'*- sufficient noise to attract I attention so a larger bell was placed there instead. Wednesday night when the hell rang the police were on the lookout and they at once pi.teed guards at all of the openings and then entered the store. Porter had madfl H?h entry through a hole in a latticed wall in the second story of the building adjoining Mr. Hugher's OfTlCt and it was as "he was trying to escape through this hide that he was nabbed by Policeman Ward. | He Implicated other negroes in the robbery and Hob Bailey, a negro em? ployed in the store, was arrested on the charges made by Porter that Bailey had made the hole in the wall and had showed it to him. Quits a commotion was caused on the street by the bell and the sub? sequent attempts to arrest the rob? ber. The store was dark and no one knew who or how many robbers might be in the store, so there was a great deal of uncertainty until the man was captured. Porter and Bailey have been lodged in jail charged with housebreaking ami larceny and will be held for the next term of COUrt. _1_ Mormons in (?afTncy.
