The program was partleularly well ordered and in-' terestlng. The main feature of th ? evening was an oratorical contest, in Which ab boyi took part. The se lectl >ns were good and well delivered, so much ho that the judges took n-> little time In arriving at even a majority vote. This majority was in favor of Mr. Winfred Kodgers, whoso subject was "The Bcholar in Poli? tics." The Instrumental numbers which lltemated With tin- orations wore much enjoyed. Mr. J. R. T. Major, pastor of the Methodist church gave a most prac? tical and interesting address. Th?- last feature of the program was the awarding of diplomas to a class of tWO, Miss Mildred James and Mr. Hays LeGrand, who have completed the 11th grade work. This was done by Prof. Meadows in a few appro? priate remarks. MAYESVILLE. Mayesvllle, June 3.?Another evi? dence of the commercial growth of this town was given yesterday, when Postmaster Cooper received notice from Washington that his salary wauld be raised to the $1,100 class on July I. ( >n January 1 this office was placed In the third class with a salary of 11,000 attached. This sec and raise within six months shows the inereass in business in the ofllce and the growth of the town und com? munity. Postmaster Cooper has lu on In the office h? re as postmaster since February, 1903, and bef:>re that date as assistant for some time, and has always given general satisfaction. The building wave continues, and all such work Is progressing nh ely. Several more residences are in course of construction, and others are con? templated In the near future. The tearing away :>f the old hotel building was bgun yesterday in orde r to make way for the handsome new hotel to he built by W. N. McElveen. This improvement will no doubt be wel? come news to many traveling men, who come to Mayesvilb\ It is ex? pected to complete the new building by September 1. Work on the claying of the main streets of the town is progressing sat? isfactorily, and the driveways will be second to none when completed.
