Carroll was absent from tu? post without lease and had been ar? rested by the town marshall of Port koval on a charge of "drunk and dis? orderly" about 4:30 this afternoon and put in the front cell on the street On account of using obscene Hid profane language, he had been put in a back cell, where ho could not be plainly heard. Shortly after 8:30 Dennis Bacon, a negro living near the Jail, heard Carroll cry "Come, turn me out of this place; it is burning up!" tie ran over and saw smoke com? ing out of the cell. He rushed to the tire bell in front of the jail and sounded an alarm which brought im? mediate response. When the door was opened the entire inside burst Into flames and planks were torn from the side of the building to k? I water in. Carroll was found, terri? bly charred, in a crouching position, with his face buried in his arms on the floor. He was so badly burned that the bones of his feet and hips showed. Carroll enlisted, November 24, at Dallas, Tex., and gave as next of kin Miss Bridget Carroll, 1136 South -west street, St. Louis, Mo. He was 24 years old. The body of the marine will be ex? pressed by the government to St Louis at the request cf relatives. Franklin was to have been hanged on December 23, having been convicted In Orangeburg County sev? eral years ago on the charge of kill? ing a constable by the name of Valen? tine. The case of Franklin has been before the United States Supreme Court and the South Carolina Su? preme Court. The Federal Court heard the case on a constitutional Question.
