Miss Bertha Ratneld, the sixteen year-old daughter of Mr. John B. Haffleld, died i bout 3 o'clock this af? ternoon at the hospital. She had teen In bad health for nearly a year, but war not supposed to be seriously ill until she was brought here Friday for treatment In the hospital. The funeral took "place Sun? day at 11 o'clock at Trlzah ohurch, at Dalzell. Mr. Haffleld has the heart? felt syrrjpathy of the people who know him here. Killed by Lighting. Addle Rouse, colored, who lived on the farm of Mr. W. A. Brown, near Gswego, was killed by lightning on Friday about 2 o'clock. There were five persons In the house when It was struck by lightning. Her ^tusbnnd struck by lightning. Her hus? band was also badly stunned. A clock on the mantel-piece was torn to pieces, and some of the things in the room were set on fire. LIGHT INFANTRY TO ENCAMP. Suiiiter Light Infantry Loft ?.Monday for Encampment at Kidgowood l*ark. Columbia. From the Daily Item June 28. Company L. Second Regiment. N. 0 S. C. left this morning on the special train for a ten days' encamp? ment at Rldgewood Park, Columbia. The Sumter company, L has forty four enlisted men. under command of Captain J. W. Bradford, and Lieut? enants G. C. Warren and Wayne Mel? len, making a total of forty.seven. The other companies that passed through here on the special train this morning were Company K, from Dar? lington, Company G, from Hartsville. Company I. from Timmonsville, Com? pany H, from Florence, and Company E, from Bennettsville. Special arrangements have been made at the encampment to add to its attractiveness. Berwick for Murder the First Case Taken Up. The Court of General Ssssions and Common Pleas convened at 1" o'clock Monday with Jude Gage I presiding and all the other officials at their posts of duty. The grand jury I was charged briefly and the business of the session was taken up without delay. Solicitor Stoll had a number i of bills of indictments in readiness and I and these were turned over to the grand jury for consideration. The first case taken up was that of the State vs. Robert If. Berwick, murder, which was continued from the last term. A jury was secured without difficulty and the trial was well un? derway within an hour after court convened. The defendent in the case was, at the time of the homicide, maranall of the town of Pine wood and it is claimed, shot one ^ Sam Bracy, who resisted arrest, in the discharge of his duty. Bracy was brought to j the Sumter Hospital for treatment and died from the effect* 0 fleeted by Marshall Barwick. u is Al? leged, on the other hand, that the ?hooting was not lawful or necessary and Marshall Barwick was indicted for murder. Although the shooting occured at Pinewood, Clarendon coun? ty, the trial is being held here, as Biacy died in this city. Dance at l*rovidence Springs.
