Farmers' Union News -AND Practical Thoughts for Practical Farmers (Conducted by E. W. Dabbs, President Furniers' Union of Sumter County.) The Watchman and Southron having decided to doubl? Its service by semi-weekly publication, would improve that service by special features. The first to bo Inaugurated Is this Department for the Farmers' Union and Practical Farmers which I have been requested to conduct. It will be my aim to give the Union news and official calls of the Union. To that end officers, and members of the Union are requested to use these columns. Also to publish such clippings from the agricultural papers and Govern? ment Bulletins as I think will be of practical benefit to our readers. Ori? ginal articles by any of our readers telling of their successes or failures will be appreciated and published. Trusting this Department will be of mutual benefit to all concerned, THE EDITOR. All communications for this Department should be sent to E. W. Dabbs, Mayesvllle, S. C. Como to the County Union meet? ing next Tuesday. Give our State President a rousing reception. ? I t Do not forgef that we rave plans of cooperation that will be worth more than the enthuslan of a big meeting. Come prepared to talk bus i/iess In a business like way. ess The Farmers' Union stands for more than a good price for cotton. It stands for better methods, better liv? ing, and the thousand and one things that make for higher Ideals of life. ? ? ? Just, as the tree is the growth of years, so the realisation of the Ideals of th?> Farmers' Union will only come In time. Every one can contri? bute tiomethlng, and mutt not be dis? couraged if there are seeming fail? ures. * ? ? ? Do not forget the day. April 6th. Do not forget the place, Alliance Hall. Concord Township. TWO WAYS FOR THE COUNTRY WOMAN TO MAKE MONEY. Groat Possibilities In C'?i ws and Chick? ens When Properly Handled. Dear Aunt Mary: There are vari? ous ways of making money by our women folks; tome take in sewing, some take a boarder or two, some can vats, and in my neighborhood tome grade tobacco and prepare it for mar? ket. I make my money differently from any of these as I get It from cows and chickens. We all raise chickens, and all we farmer folkt ought to keep a cow. To have milk and but? ter all the time it Is absolutely nec? essary to keep two cows. To care for two It not very much more trouble than it It to care for one. The milk? ing it the principal difference, and I find If I can get to the lot to milk one I can stay to milk the second. Get ft Cents More a Pound for Butter of Quality. f Anybody with two good cowt ought to tell not lets than $50 worth of but ter In a year. I have in the past year told |t8 worth of butter from my two cowt. They were both dry their full period and both raited calves, not on skim milk but on whole milk. Be? sides there was a family of six?and hired hands?to eat butter. It Is use? less to say the butter was good. I had a demand for all I could make, and got five cents on the pound more than ordinary butter told for. This It the surplus, mind you, to tay nothing of the milk the pigt got and they cer? tainly were pleased with It and grunt? ed their approval every time they were fed. ' These cows are not scrubs, neither are they registered. They have reg? istered sires. To Make Money From Cickens, Get Good Stock. While this Is one good way for a woman on the farm to make money, another way fully at good Is the mining of chickens. To realize the beat profits and be in demand the chickens mutt be good. It Is much MOrt encouraging to have good chickens than sorry ones, to say noth? ing of the Increased profits. Some PMpfl say any old hen will lay and that corn makes the hog. There Is but one way for them to lie con vlnced let them get full-blood chick? ens or logs and feed them right along with their scrub! and they will iSVOf regret what the superior stock cost in the beginning. (?in' can make as much money off thickens for the capital Invested im he cm off anything else. You can bU) ? trio of good fowls for $'? and they will begin to make you some? thing In a few days. Select sum. breed that you like, write to the nd rtrtlufi and mmmmU them About their breedt. they will be glad to an w < t inquiries. I have found the White Wyandottes to answer my purpose fine. Any one that hat any taste for chickens at all couldn't help admiring thorn, to see them standing in the yard with full breast, head erect and stately carriage. <;<mn1 Fowl* Lay Twice as Many Kggs as Scrubs. 'Not only are they pretty, but for a general purpose fowl are unexcell? ed. There is certainly no money in. scrub chickens. They won't lay Christmas eggs. Why I used to raise icrubs and had to save eggs some? times two months to have enough for Christmas, and now I never think of such a thing. I get enough in two or three days and don't keep as many hens as I used to. I find they will lay twice as many eggs as scrubs, and scrubs are continually getting sick and dying. On the other hand, I have never seen a sick Wynadotte. Those who feel they can't afford a trio can afford a cockerel, and the cross is quite an improvement on the scrub. The light colored breeds have an advantage over the dark ones in be? ing easier to dress. The White Wyan* dottes can easily be made to weigh two pounds at 8 weeks old. MRS. F. M. SHEARON. Oil-rial Deicgute-^ettcr for Aflmllllf tratlon Holds Reim?No Southern Democrats Ncotl Apply. Washington, aMrch 31.?Numer? ous citizens of Spartanburg have evi? dently been misled by somj of the newspaper stories about the "new or? der of things" into believing that the ?enatov3 and representatives from the Southern States are potent in post masterial matters. Senator Smith md Representative Johnson have loth received v.elegrams from various >nes in Sartaiburg requesting that they hold up 'ho naming of a man as postmaster at Spartanburg to suc? ceed the late Col. Poiner until "a'l applicants" er '?other'" applicants have been heard from. Alas, little doe* Senator Smith or Representative Johnson have to do with such mat? ters. There is one Hitchcock, you know, who has been installed as the politi? cal secretary pie dispenser and dele? gate getter for the administration. He is the man one has to see, and don't let anybody be decived, for he has not yet been convinced that Democratic postmasters are of any great service in sending the right kind of delegates to the next nation? al Republican convention. Likewise, not having in his experience found Democrptic congressmen of any great assistance in the carrying out of poli? tical scheme of the administration, he has not beeil accustomed to take the advice of congressmen fiom the South. A8 to Mr. Taft, he is genial enough, slaps Democrats on the back, ap he does others, and that sort of thing, but he does not like to interfere with he administration of postofflce mat? ters by his postmaster general. Representative Johnson called twice at the postolllce department to? day to see Mr. Hitchcock, but he did not. see him, Mr. Hitchcock being out toth times.?The State.
