Mr. Bryan declares that the pam? phlet of Mr. Van Cleave raises two questions. First?Is there anything In the labor plank of the Democratic platform to which business men can Justly take exeer'Uns? Second?Is the labor question so Important to business men as to Justify them In Ignoring all other Issues? Mr. Bryan declares that the provi? sion In the Democratic platfom for the creation of a labor department with a esblnet officer at Its head can? not possibly offend business men. He then says: "The platform draws a distinction associations of wags earners for the protection of wages the Improvement of labor condi? tions and Industrial corporations which act \n restraint of trade. The differ? ence between a labor organisation and n tmst Is to apparent that no disinter? ested person wi l deny that they should be treated separately. CONFLAGRATION STARTED BY A CIGARETTE. Armour & Co. Kstimat. Their IiOss on Grain at $700.000?eighty -Fire Engines at Work. Chicago, Aug. 3.?Fire which was so hot that the firemen could not get nearer than a block of it, and which, made it necessary to play streams of water on buildings three and four squares away, this afternoon destroy? ed the Burlington elevators "E" and "F," the dock transfer warehouse of that road and either burned or ren? dered useless 100 box cars. The loss on the grain in the two elevators la placed by Armour & Co., who owned it, at $700,000. The totals loss la placed $100,000. The fire started at 1 p. m., in Bur? lington warehouse, supposedly from n cigarette dropped near several bar? rels containing chemicals. At the first explosion the 250 men employed In the warehouse and ele? vators fled and it is believed all es? caped. Eighty fire engine companlee and three fire tugs had all they could do to confine the conflagration to its original limits. At 3 o'clock, Firs* Marshall Horan declared that further spread of the flames was not to be feared. Tonight, however, several en? gines are pouring their streams into the glowing wreckage. Postage Stamp Gum. Every time a person licks a United States postage stamp he gets a taste of sweet potatoe. The gum with which. the stamps are backed is made from that succulent vegetable because Un? cle Sam's lteutenaats consider it the most harmless preparation of the sort. All of the gum used on American post? age stamps is mixed by the govern? ment at the bureau of engraving and printing, where the stamps are made. It is spread on the sheets after the stamps have been printed. The gum, is a liquid form, is forced up through pipes from the basement, where it la made. These pipes lead to a series of machines consisting of rollers, be? tween which the sheets of stamps are fed, one at a time. A continuous fine stream of the liquid gum fn'-Ls upon one of these rollers. The sheet with its wet coating of sweet potato muci? lage passes from the rollers into a long horizontal flue filled with hot air. When it emerges at the other end of the flue the gum is dry.?New Yorks. Telegram. Origin of Snnange. The sausage dates back to the year 897. Winnipeg, Man., Aug. 3.?Latest re? ports from the forest fires raging in and around Fernie, B. C, tonight place the number of fatalities at 125 persons and the property loss about $8,000, 000. From 5.000 to 7,000 men, women and children driven from the flame swept region of Crow's Nest territory, are camped in Cranebrook and the surrounding hills. The situation tonight at Michel h? critical. Numerous fires started in the town this afternoon which were only put out by heroic exertions. Fires are raging on all s4des and it only remains for high Wind to rten and continue the destruction. Hopes are faint f?>r the safety of the place, for ihOttld the tire jump across the river It will be impossible to save the town. Not alone the new town, but the coal company's buildings and the entire old town will be doomed. Congre'sman Janus Lloyd, of Mis Bouri, chairman of the Democratic congressional committee, expects to open the headquarters for his com? mittee in Chicago about August 15.
