In a winy speech last night at the
roistering weekly exercises of the Ak

that he then felt like replying to cer?

be revised by an authority "higher
up." and. therefore should he then

something that had no official ex

tion to make a flying trip to New
York, personally to survey the field
there with the view to deciding upon
a plan of campaign for the capture
of that State. Since hi* return from
Chicago, however, he has tentatively
changed his original purpose and now
* may not visit New York until he has
attended the Kern notification meet?
ing.
But there can be no doubt of Mr.
Bryan's strong desire to plunge into
the fight for the electoral vote of New
I \.?rk State with ?1 of his old-time
vigor and fire. He keeps himself In
formed of developments In that State,
and In spite of hi* Inability to obtain
the service* of a man trained In In
duMrtal business to manage his cam
* patgn. he Is convinced that he Is
stronger In New York than he ever

large share of attention to the fight
there he will carry the State.

this connection the name of Richard

It Is also stated here that had Mr.
Bryan been disposed to act dlctatorl
ally at the Chicago conference, he
would have openly discouraged the
re-election of Urey Woodson, of
Kentucky, a* secretary of the na?
tional committee. In view of this cir?
cumstance It Is regarded as probable
that the work of the secretary of the
committee which may be eventually
charged with the real responsibility
for the direction of the campaign, will
be done by some person other than
Mr. Woodson.

deeply Impressed with the work of
the Democrstic convention," Wil*
Ham J. Bryan today issued a state?
ment in which he expresses the opin?
ion that Mr. Taft "fears the uprising
whleh Republican abuses hauve caus?
ed and yet hesitates to adopt, his real
and substantial refcrms." >
The statement was called forth be?
cause of the allegation made by Taft
in his speech of acceptance at Cin?
cinnati yesterday that Mr. Bryan was
a destroyer of business. In regard to
the speech Mr. Bryan said:
"I read and shall discuss it as . I
deal with the various subjects upon
which It treats. For Instance. In a
speech at Topeka, between now and
the 1st of September. I shall discuss
the guaranty of banks and contrast
Mr. Taft's position with the Demo?
cratic position. In Chicago I sha'l
discuss his attitude on the labor
question. In other speeches I shall
discuss his attitude on the tariff ques?
tion, the trust question and other
questions on which he hag expressed
himself.
"The most noticeable feature of his
speech is his sttempt to amend the
Republican platform by engrafting in
In some of the planks of the Demo?
cratic platform. He is evidently not
satisfied with the work of his conven?
tion and is deeply Impressed by the
work of the Democratic convention.
He Is uncharitable, however, in not
giving the Democratic party credit
for having pointed out the reforms
which his convention repudiated, but
which he. in a half-hearted way. en?
dorses. The speech shows that he
fears the uprising which Republican
abuses have caused and yet hesitates
to adopt his real substantial re?
forms."

The actual writing of his speech
of acceptance has not yet been begun
by Mr. Bryan, but he said today that
hi* Ideas were about formulated and
he would enter upon the work of
preparation In a day or two. The
fact that an additional stenographer
has appeared on the scene Is an In?
dication that all Is In readiness for
