There was, however, no great damage done but the horses had a long run, i Capt. H. A. Wells, one of the most I popular conductors on the Coast Line, who runs between Fayetteville and Columbia, had the misfortune to lose his pockethook on Saturday, contain? ing about $120 and his passes and other valuable 'papers. He had re? ceived no information concerning It this morning and nil who know Capt Wells sympathize with him in his heavy loss, for in these stringent times the sum of $120 Is, indeed a big loss. A movement is on foot to call n mass meeting of antl-dispensaryit^s at which plans for a campaign to work up a sentiment in favor of voting out te dispensary will be perfected. It is claimed by the promoters of the mass meeUng that there will be no trouble In obtaining the required number of sllgnatures to the petition asking that an election be ordered and that when the election Is held the dispensary will be voted out of Sumter county by an overwhelm: ng majority. Mr. Horace B. Curtis, a native of Bridgeport, Conn., but for the past 40 years a resident of Sumter, died at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon after an ill? ness lasting about 10 days or two weeks. He was not conlsdered criti? cally 111, but during Thursday night he was suddenly taken worse and be? coming unconscious he remained in this condition until he died. The deceased was for a number of years a member of the old and well Curtis Carriage company of Sumter until the dissolution some years since, and of late years he has been the proprietor of a hotel, the on South Main street, and he also conducted a paint supply house and painting business up to his last Illness. He was an Industrious and useful citizen and public spirited. He was the owner of valuable property in this city. His death will shock his numerous friends all over Sumter county. Mr. Curtis was about 55 vears old. He leaves a widow and one child, and jtwo brothers, Mr. Charles S. Curtis of Sumter and Mr. George Curtis of Paxville. He married Miss Maggie Brogdon of Sumter county. The funeral services were held on Saturday and Interment made in the ?un-.ter cemetery. At the meeting Friday afternoon of the executive committee of the chamber of commerce, it was decided to ask for a larger appropriation for the proposed public' building for Sumter. This will be done at the next session of congross through Con? gressman Lever of this district. Secretary Reardon, of the chamber of commerce, has been instructed to aecure all necessary data in regard to the matter, so that an Idea may be obtained oh so what amount will give this city a suitable and commodi? ous building. All the facts will be given to Cengressman Lever as soon as possible and every effort will be made to secure for Sumter a hand? some and appropriate federal build? ing. The watfT mains are being extended on the Ml nets on the south side of the city beyond the railway tracks.
