Ansel, said that the new Cour House, typified the .progress and en terprise of Sumter county along ai lines, and demonstrates the enter prise, courage, faith and unselfish pa triotism of our people as a whole an< of those who had charge of the worl in particular. This Court House ha created a new standard for cour houses and has set an example to al Carolina. It will give our people ? higher conception of what a cour house really stands for in our fora of government. He presented Gov Ansel, the highest officer of our State "as one fitted by training, experience and native abilty to address the as sembled people on this occasion. GOV. ANSEL'S SPEECH. Gov. Ansel spoke as follows: Most Worshipful Grand Mastei Brethren of the Mystic Tie, Ladie and Gentlemen: I feel it an honor b be present this morning. I felt it aj honor when I received an invitatio; to be present and to say a few word upon this auspicious occasion. Masons are a.pf, in their minds, to go back to the building of King Solo mon's Temple, as chey sit this da; and see this temple of justice here They will go back in their minds t< the days of operative Masonry, whei that temple was erected to law an< to order. They will go back in thei: minds to the day of the building o King Solomon's Temple, when specu lative Masonry, that which we repre sent here today, had its beginnini and had its birth. That day, m: friends, when the Church and th< State were one, when that temple wa: built without the sound of hammer where all the stone, fittingly joined together in the quarries, were "placee in their position, when the cornel stone was laid in its position ano when at last the cap stone was placed in its position, thereby completing the work. In every day, my friends, and in every country we find that law ol some kind governs the people. Go with me, if you please, today in the jungles of Africa, and you will find that there they have their laws; go with me into the heart of China and you will find that there they have their laws; go with me to Japan or Turkey or any of the Oriental coun? tries, and you will find that they have their law there. Come with me now, my friends, nearer to our home and go with me to the European powers and you will find that they have their laws there, and then come, if you please, to this beloved country of ours, this United States, and the State of South Carolina, and you will find that we have our law and order here. And we are here for the pur? pose this day. my friends, of laying the corner stone of this beautiful tem? ple of justice-this beautiful temple erected to law and erected to order. The Church and the State of these days have been separated, and we, in this great and free country of ours, in a republican form of government, where we can worship God under our own vine and fig tree, we shape our government, and complete the temple of justice with the- cap stone of the Goddess of Justice, holding ,n her hands the scales of justice. In every country and in every day, therefore, low of some kind has been maintain? ed, and we are proud of the day. my friends, of the fact that we live in this country of the free and the brave, and that we may erect temples for law and for order, am-, that our peo? ple, gr^at and small, obi and young, can come here and have dispensed to them truth and justice with an even hand. Think for a moment what : this country would be without law i and without orct^r. Think, if you will, j please, the great cares and the great destruction that would go from one end of this country to the other, were it not for the law of the land, for the : law of which binds us together as citizens, which binds us together as brethren, and 'which binds us as a people of a State and binds us togeth- . : er a people of a nation. Our people, my friends, I am glad y ! to say, are a peace-loving and law-? abiding people. I am not a pessimist ? myself, and I believe that the people are better today than they have ever been in the history of this country^ j because they are imbued with the love of justice, and God has implant? ed in their hearts and minds .lessons of truth and justice to th sir fellow? men and to this we owe it, to ourselves -our people that t are ?. gathered around about us and to the State and, to the nation in which we live. I am glad to know that throughout the length and breadth ci this country that our people IOOK to law and look to order, and I feel satisfied, or I fee! more than satisfied of the fact that in . South Carolina today the people are a law-abiding and peace- Irving peo?? pie. Here is erected a temple o? justice,, a temple of law, and represen cing aa I do, and as your servant, my friends, law and order in Souch Carolina, i\ was my bounden duty to be present here and to say to you these things and others that I will say. Temple of jus* cice-temple of truth-temple of law -ab, my friends, beautiful truth, white-winged truth, is to show ita 'hand here and love of its purity, in all of its grandeur, in all of its sim plicity as, truth between citizens, truth , between litigants, truth and justice among all of the people. Here it is. my friends, that the law which is en? acted by you, by the people, because in this republican form of government of ours you are the people, you are, the law-makers and it is the laws that you, through your repr?senta* tives, make that is to be carried out and enforced Ly him who sits upon the bench as he holds your court from term to term. He who hold justice with an even hand. He has to admin-, ister justice with an even hand and. to know every one-to the rich and to the poor-to the great and to the small-that every one, be he rich or poor, is entitled to in this liberty-lov? ing country of ours. Justice, my frineds, that which is due-that one owes to the other, these I say, well known to these brothers of the Mys* tic Tie, w-ho are here before me today, Justice knows no man, knows nothing but the truth, knows nothing but that which is right and which is proper and which is just and which is true. In every land, as I said, my friends, law has been established and in this twentieth century and in this good year of 1907 we, as a peace loving, law-abiding people, come to do honor tc this occasion, to give encourage* men- to those who have so welt builded this house and to tell them,_ by our very presence here, that we? are a law-abiding people, that we are a law-loving people and that we love justice and truth, and that it is our * desire and the desire of every one,, that for all time to come this beauti? ful temple may dispense justice and may dispense truth and may dispense light to all ihe people who sha?? copie-, within its walls. I desire to congratulate you-I de? sire to congratulate the peole of Sum ier county and I desire to congratu? late the people of South Carolina up :-n what you have done here in erect? ing this 5100,000 structure, and it is but an earnest, my friends, of what you are doing and to carry on . the great purposes of law and of order tnat have prevailed in this country. You have set the pace for court house building, in order that others may see the good work that you have done, that they may come here and go within these walls and go back to their homes and build likewise. Ths erection of this very building sbow* to my mind what a progressive peo? ple, what a liberty-loving people you have in Sumter county. Go into any of the counties of the State and you. will find many court houses, many beautiful court houses, but there af? some that have not such handswwtfl court houses. But I think it is an earnest to su pr them up. I desire to congratulate you and all of the peo? pie upon the great work that ha* been done here. And another thing that I want to say: I want to sympa? thize with you-not in the erection Of this Court House, but in having to stand where you arc in the sun tilts morning, look at this beautiful struc* ture and listen to what has beet; t^id.
