Bywaters was like -a. brother prior to her father's death. Mrs. Bywaters stated that after death of her father Bywaters became more -attentive. She still regarded him as ?v brother; Explaining why she yield? ed tq this man she declared that she loved hint and had confidence in him. He declared he would "always be faith? ful and true. After relating the history of the Strother family, the relations between Viola and Bywaters and the confession of the alleged at? tempt at desertion, etc, Attorney Moore said: "These being facts, Doc? tor, how would you characterize the act of homicide?" Prosecuting Attorney Keith ob jected instantly, declaring that the question does not recite facts testified hy the defendants, and there is noth? ing to show the act was sudden or "by impulse. I Orangeburg now has a population : of about 8,^00, but Mr. Hawes in I drawing his plans, made them for a city of 30,000, so that the work to be done is expected to answer all pur? poses for the next .20 years?, or until the population exceeds 30,000. These plans call foi- a system of 30 miles, of which the contract just let covers about 10 miles. This 10 miles pro? vides for sewerage on all streets and parts of the city now having water system, and as the water mains are extended from time to time, by coun? cil, the sewerage system will also be extended. _ In other words, the work to be done under the present contract will forever be the trunk lines, and it will be very easy to ex? tend the system with the growth of the city. The sewerage will drain towards the Edisto Paver, but the pipes will first run into a "disposal vat" where the refuse will be consumed or dis? posed of, so that only the waste wa? ter will find its way into the river. Bids were first opened in January, but it was thought all were too high, so Were rejected and new bids were called for. These new bids were opened on Thursday, and it was found there were five bids ranging from $45,000 to $52,000. One of the bids was from a local concern, but the lowest,.;. and the one finally accepted by the city council, was that of Ber? ghaus & Moofat of Harrisburg, Pa. They were required to give bond in the sum of 25 per cent, of the con? tract sum, and must begin work at once. Representatives c-f the firm, who were here for the opening of bids, stated they were ready to commence work, just as soon as the factories could get some piping here, and that they expected to complete the work within 200 working days. When asked how he proposed to handle the labor question, he said it was very probable the firm would make no attempt to use negroes, but would bring Hungarian labor from Pennsylvania, where they are now us? ing numbers of them in work being done there. ?To remove a cough you must get at the cold which causes the cough.
