The negro Richard Dargan who -was hanged in Bennetssville Friday is said to have been a Sumter county negro, and if this be . true he was ^probably a half brother of the noto? rious murderer, Simon Cooper, who was shot to death some years ago aft *er killing five people and being ch?sed .across the country for a day and a half. The extension will be 110 feet in length and will make the depot the largest on the Atlantic Coast Line between Columbia and Wilmington. Beginning last Monday, October 22nd, mail service was inaugurated on passenger trains 79 and 7S run? ning between Fayetteville X. C. and Columbia. This service has been put on at the request of the people of Florence and other towns on the At? lantic Coast Line and will be a great improvement in the postal facilities of this section of the State. Attention is directed to the adver? tisement of O'Donnell & Co. Two railway employes were injured in the Atlantic Coast Line yards Wednesday afternoon by being thrown from a hand car which jump? ed the track. Neither was hurt se? riously, but one of them had to be taken to the .infirmary to have his wounds dressed. The tax values of this city have I practically doubled since 1900. The farmers who are worrying over { ! the short crop and crying hard times should recollect that they are far better off than they were ten years ago. Their lands \alone have almost doubled in value in ten years, and cotton is selling for ll cents. Things could be much worse ? than they are and are far better than this country has experienced. It is said that the number of ne? groes who are slaves to the cocaine habit is growing greater rapidly and that once the habit is acquired there is no redemption. The fiend becomes a vagrant and a criminal and that to obtain the drug he will steal any- I thing he can lay his hands on. Al number of the fiends are well known to the police and are frequently be? fore Recorder Hurst. Coroner Flowers has forward?d j to Governor Heyward the papers in . the case of John Coleman, the fugitive j murderer, with the request that a re- j ward be offered for Coleman's cap- j ture. j A large and handsome new hospital is to be erected for the Mood-Osteen ? Infirmary, the patronage of that in- j stitution having largely outgrown the capacity of the present quarters. The new building will cost in the neigh- ! borhood of $25,000, perhaps more. | The site for the new building has not j yet been selected, but it is planned to i have spacious grounds surrounding . the hospital. The D. J. Chandler Clothing Co., ? guided by an experience of more than 1 a score of years, makes a specialty of j well tailored and stylish suits for ! men. The line this year is particular- i ly attractive and the stock from ' which a selection is offered, is large. I The prices are within the reach of all. j Some say that city girls are poor, ] ignorant things. Some of them can- j not tell a horse from a cow, but. j they do know that Hollister's Rocky | Mountain Tea is one of the greatest beautifiers known. Tea or Tablets, ' 35 cen*s. China's Drug Store. John Gray, alias Dr. Buzzard, a shrewd negro, who has been swindling ignorant country negroes for months and has been sent to the chaingang several times, was before the recorder Wednesday. He was charged with sell? ing a "hand" or "conjure" bag/to a negro from Privateer for $3. The bag which was produced in evidence con? tained nothing but a small piece of brick. Josh set up a general denial but the evidence and his record were against him, so he was sent up for 30 days. There are several other cases of a similar character against him that will be taken up when the pres? ent sentence expires. Joe Lang was given $5 or 10 days for beating his wife and creating a disturbance on West Liberty street that night. Washington, Oct. 23.-President Roosevelt this afternoon issued the annual Thanksgiving proclamation, setting apart Thursday, November 29 as the date. Letter to Geo. F. Epperson. Sumter, S. C. Dear Sir: If yon could get the ex? clusive sale of a coal that would give double beat and cost no more, you'd jump at it, wouldn't you? You'd control the trade for a hnn dred miles ! Devoe is like that among paints; a short ton is a9 good as a iong one of any paint yoa can name ; a gallon is worth more than two of many a popu? lar paint. Suppose you have painted your house about once in three years ever since it was new; you buy the sarae number of gallons Devoe, have a third of it left, and it wears six yeafrs. Count your costs. SI.75 a gallon for paint; S3.50 a gal? lon for putting iyfc on ; you saved 5 gal? lons; ?26.25 on this job. But you save the whole job of three years hence : about $75. Put 'em together: $100. Can't reckon so accurately as that ; but you see how it goes. Paint isn't alike any more than coal. ?!ow much more is coal worth than l-l slate. Yours truly, F. W. Devoe & Co., 16 * New York. P.
