WtMESDAY, DECEMBER 6, iaoo. The Sumter Watchman was founded in 1850 and th? True*Southron< in 1866. The Watchman and Southron nov? has the com? bined circulation and influence of both of the old papeiSj and is manifestly the best advertising medium in Sumter. From The Daily Item, Dec. 1. There is such a thing as fun and frolic. There is, also, such a thing as rowdyism. A frolic presupposes that the partici? pants are at least acquaintances and of the same social station, if not friends and intimates. Riot and rowdyism is an indiscrimi? nate burly -irarly participated in by the world, ^the flesh and the devil. It has "been a tenet of our faith that people of refinement are never guilty of so far forgetting tneir birtii and breeding and the self-respect due themselves and the circles in which . they move as to be guilty of rowdyism and riotious conduct by which they lower themselves to the level of the rude, uncouth and vulgar. Our faith, however, joras rudely shaken by the scenes we witnessed on the crowded streets yesterday and last night. Men,wTomen * and young girls of both breeding and supposed refinement paraded the streets with whips, sticks and other weapons of offense and in? sult, cutting and slashing everybody they^Tdet, big buck negroes, dirty wenches and the lowest of the low, all idiscriminately with their friends. It was a disgusting spectacle, cal? culated to make the judicious grieve and the thoughtful to marvel that such things could be in South Carolina. We are satisfied that the conduct we witnessed was due to thoughtless? ness and that even those who were most active in the carnival of rowdy? ism, if they had paused for a moment to consider their conduct would have been ashamed for themselves' and wo?ld thereafter have conducted themselves with a decorum becoming their station and their parentage. We do not wish to be harsh or severe in our condemnation of conduct that many may excuse or attempt to ex? culpate on the plea of exceptional cir? cumstances, but we do here and now appeal to the people of Sumter, the young people especially, to remember that they are white people, ladies and gentlemen, the descendants of gene? rations of gentle, self-respecting peo? ple, and hereafter conduct themselves as such. Ii is ?eitlier amusing, ele? vating nc- becoming to indulge in a riot of rowdyism and rudeness v.;;h people you do not know a id vvoutd not reeognixc nor associate with. And it is humilating to your friends to witness such conduct The greatest question of the hour is. "How many seed does Dr. Durant's pumpkin contain?" This query is the most enthusiastically debated one that Sumter people have considered in years; some contend that there are not les? than 3,000 seed in the pumpkin, while others are placing their guesses from 800 to 1,500. Every one should make at least one guess, as it re? quires only a nickle purchase to ob? tain a guessing coupon. The premium is a tempting one, a forty-dollar watch or jewelry to the amount of the value of the watch at Folsom's Jewelry store. Take a guess. -, Entertainment at Acton.
