To say that the news of the sudden death of Major William P. B. Hayns? worth on last Thursday morning shocked the people of this city as the sad intelligence was passed from lip . to lip, but feebly, expresses the feeling ?bat pervaded ail classes. Retaining ft?s mental and physical vigor to a re snarkable degree long past the years allotted to man, he was seen until a iew days ago going about the streets pursuing accustomed avocations, and the death of no citizen could have "been more unexpected. No man who Ssas ever lived in Sumter was more respected, more revered or more gen? erally beloved and no one will be i?ore missed. His death will be a loss to the com? munity for his long life of 81 years was a daily example of honesty, vir? tue, righteousness and godliness in all circumstances and' an conditions. His entire life which was spent in this ciity, the place of his birth, was an. open "book for ail to read, and profit . thereby. JThis committee was inform? ed ?bat tbe system could be purchased for $116,000, and when an appeal to tile courts to break the contract was intimated, they were . informed. that .litigation bad no terrors for tbe com? pany and the city of S am ter could go i into court just as soon ss it saw fit. There the. conference ended. He is from Ferrandina, Basilicata, Italy, which is in the centre of the celebrat? ed frist and wine producing area of that country. He said that it would be easy to get a colony to come to this county from his home, and that they would soon be able to do for this county what they have done for Cali? fornia. It* would be necessary to have some organized effort made to bring tfeem, as definite data as to location of colony on a suitable tract of suffi? cient area would have to be given, and we suggets to the Chamber of Commerce; the .advisability of taking tbe matter up with him.
