WisDJSTESDAY, NOV. 22, 1899. The Sumter Watchman was toundeo D 1850 and the True Southron in 1866. Tbs Watchman and Svvthron now has the cornbioed circulation and influence pf both of the old papera, and is mani? festly the best advertising medium io Sumter. Mr. A. Howard Patterson of Barn? well baa issued an open letter in defense of the dispensary system and strikes an attitude for the guberna? torial lightning to hit him. He [is early in the race for the nomination, but he will not want for company when the office seeker's circus starts on the tour of the State. Gen Wheeler has burnt his bridges behind him and wilt remain in the Philippines to lid m conquering the Filipinos for the imperialist land grabbers. He has gone over to the McKinley crowd bag* and baggage, and the people of Alabama will find no difficulty in electing a man who will more truly represent them in congress than Gen wheeler could while he entertained his present opinions There is a lull in the dispensary war while the armor clad warriors are recovering from their wounds. It w^ald be a wise precaution for the warriors to invest in a few joints of heavy B?ove pipe before the next battle."* Legs are quite as vulnerable as other parts of the body. In the case of Oazts, if he has any idea of abandoning the pen for the pistol or shot gun, we advise tobacco barn flues as a suitable covering for his extremities A molasses evaporator might serve bim as a chest and stomach protector in lieu of Marion made armor. As tobacco barns and molasses evaporators are pienti ful in Marion County this sort of armor may be obtained near the field of battle. He was for several years a member of the lower house of the New Jersey legislature and once its speaker He was also president of the senate of the state for several years He never figured in national politics until 1S96 when he was put on the ticket with McKinley.
